Can anyone tell me whether there have been reports of communal violence, political unrest, etc. in Punjab (more specifically Amritsar) as of late? I tried to do a search on the web, but the results were rather unwieldy. . .

For example, the Canadian Department of Consular Affairs recommends that citizens avoid/limit travel in Gujarat, Jammu & Kashmir and the Line of Control. . .they don't extend this to Amritsar or Punjab, but I'd like to have a sense of whether anything has been taking place there over the past year or two.

I'm not looking for an "out" from going ~ on the contrary, it's in my plans to visit. . .but I'm about to share my travel plans with my family and want to be able to allay any concerns that they might raise.

Thank you!!

I think this Canadian Government information is a bit out of date. Gujarat did have communal problems nearly two years ago but everything is pretty quiet now and foreign tourists were never targetted.

As for Amritsar and Punjab generally, I'm not aware of any problems there for a very long time.

Terrorist activity continues in Jammu and Kashmir and most governments have posted warnings about travel to this area, so that's up to the person to decide whether to visit or not.

On second thoughts, they may be referring to the Gujarat/Pakistan border area in Kutch but very few people go there and I think the Indian army wouldn't allow anyone to get close to the border anyway.

Thanks, Alan. On re-reading the government information, they do caution against travel to the border area, but they also mention the communal issues separately (two sentences referring to limiting travel and being vigilant at night). . .so it may very well need updating.

Gujarat isn't in my plans for other reasons. . .I spent a couple of weeks there in 2001 and am hoping to visit some new areas of the country on this trip.

Still, it's that "type" of thing that I want to be prepared for (informed about), in case my parents raise concerns.

Thanks again.
