Hi I am trying to organise a trip to Goa via Pune (to watch the cricket)

we would like to go from Pune to Goa by train .

My research suggest rather than train to Mumbai and then a train to Goa I should get a taxi to Parvel Junction and then get the train down to Goa

Has anyone done this and is this practical for 4 adults with suitcases or is there a better option

if it is sensible how long should I allow to travel from Pune to Parvel Junction

Many thanks

There are direct trains from Pune to Goa:
12780 Goa Express (daily); leaves Pune 4.35 pm, reaches Madgaon at 5.40 am;
22150 Ernakulam Express (Wed and Sun only), leaves Pune at 6.45 pm, reaches Madgaon at 7.10 am;
11098 Poorna Express (Sat only), leaves Pune at 11.30 pm, reaches Madgaon at 4.50 pm.

Much simpler than changing trains/transport modes en route if these timings/days of operation work for you.

Thanks very much, unfortunately the cricket is on Sunday so we will be travelling on the Monday and wanted to travel through the day to see some of India rather than travel through the night.

any more info gratefully received

thanks

In that case, the best option will indeed be to get a taxi to Panvel and connect to the 10103 Mandovi Express from there (departs 8.30 am, arrives 8.10 pm until 31 October/arrives 6.45 pm from 1 Nov). This is a slow, leisurely journey down the coast on a train that has a decent selection of food available. Keep in mind this train is usually late arriving Goa by an hour or more.

Another, more scenic option (though this does involve overnight travel) is to take the 17318 Hubli Express from Pune to Londa (leaves Pune 11.10 pm, arrives Londa 8.40 am) and catch the Amaravathi Express 2 hours later (departs 10.40 am, arrives Madgaon 1.55 pm). The second journey is really beautiful - descending the mountains into Goa and passing a large waterfall:

Taxi to Panvel railway station should take around 2:30-3:00 hours.

There are Mumbai-Pune-Mumbai taxi services.

If you plan to take the 8:30 am train you would need to leave Pune by 4:00 am so that you are in Panvel station by 7:30.

Another option could be take the Jan Shatabdi to Madgaon that leaves early morning from Dadar station. Take a Pune - Dadar bus leaving Pune at 11:00 pm. The railway station is a 10 minute walk from the last stop. Cross the road and take a left from Dadar post office. Or you could also take the Double Decker which leaves from LTT early in the morning. To board that you will have to get down at Chembur Naka and then take an autorickshaw.

Both the above mentioned trains halt at Panvel.

Hi,

I travelled on the Goa Express train last week in 3 tier AC. Its not that hot yet and it would have been OK in a non AC class. There is plenty of space for luggage under the seats. And most Indians are so helpful and will arrange their luggage to accommodate yours. I would recommend keeping you important/valuable items in a bag with you when you are sleeping. I tie the straps around the chain the beds hang off of. There are not many thefts, but I do not want to be in India without my passport and money.

There were continually staff on the train selling snacks and drinks and the food carriage staff come to take orders for breakfast, lunch and dinner. The train is an Indian experience and I think you should go for it.
