Eco Tourism
Greetings Members,
I live in Nashik, Maharashtra and am interested in starting an Eco resort. I have an acre of land adjoining a water body. Wanted ideas on cost effective ec o houses which are easy to manage and classy. We are a nature friendly family and have ideas on the events to be included but ideas and suggestions are most welcome.
Thanking you all.Have a gr8 year

Mod note: Kindly do not use SMS abbreviations such as 'gr8'. Please write out your words in full.

Sustainable living for the win! (:

I don't have any experience with this, but maybe you could ask the people in Auroville (or the Rainbow family) for advice? I also remember seeing some wiki style pages on these things, will post here if I find them again.

hello arun,
There are many ways to create cost effective eco tourism, but before that want to know are there any resorts near by your location or you planning to have an resort in completely different side.

What are your local earthen building techniques? Build to that. If I was going to spend my hard earned eco tourist dollars, I would like to feel like this is how its always been, this is how we do things in the country.

Yeah, a friend and I once bought a load of cow shit, straw and tree branches to try our hands at building a little house in the corner of the yard. I even rolled my own stove pipe out of sheet metal. I'm sure there are more pucka methods to go about that than what a couple of phorens came up with.

Our group have been doing so, so you can contact with me if you are interested because our expedition group can put good focus on the spot and I am also going to start a new eco-Hut in a hilly-forest zone.

@arun : you will need about 10 posts before you can send/receive private mail from other IM users.

Green means different things to different people. Sometimes it means using only local ( about 10 km radius from your site) materials in the buildings, it means using renewable energy sources, using recyclable toilets, using different building methods ( for example, bigger thicker bricks) among many other things. using bio-gas plants is one such thing i have not included in the above list (

Foremost, you might want to decide what your involvement period is in this project, and the kind of returns you are expecting. Green projects generally have a long period before they break even.

And you might want to investigate the rules governing building permits, because you are near a water body (not sure if that is publicly owned).

Most of our rules are geared towards a standard process, and any deviation from that process requires additional planning. Google can be your friend in this.

You might want to check out this blog for any relevant information

professional architect a must for you!
Arun, if you are thinking of building a commercial resort then quality is important for you. It is best to seek the services of a professional in the field-- someone who has already designed and built eco-resorts--- even if it will cost you a bit more. A well designed and planned resort with an aesthetic look will attract customers readily and help you break even sooner.

I recommend Eugene Pandala, an architect from Kerala, who has designed excellent resorts, the most famous being Banasura resort in Wayanad, Kerala. Pl. see Pandala has also designed private residences using mud as the primary building medium.

Eugene Pandala can be contacted at the following numbers:

Ph: (0474)2701610

Also see his website to get an idea of the buildings he has designed:

Good luck and do keep us posted about your progress. Cheers! Tulsi
