Hi
I was thinking of building a house in India. The quality of builders, building design etc... seems very low and I was wondering if anyone knew of some books that show how to diy build a quality house in the developing world using local materials.

i.e. using western ideas (like thermal insulation); simple design (like simple window latches); etc... but to build something of good quality cheaply.

Too often I see that westerns pay incredible amounts to local people to build low quality house with windows that aren't square, or leaking roofs, and builders who work half days and then disappear.

To build a simple home must be quite easy and I am looking for books or resources about how to build well, intelligently, in the developing world.

thanks

It will be a nightmare. If you are of non-Indian origin, it will be especially stressful.

Not just quality of workmanship, but integrity, keeping to times or schedules or supplying, building or doing what was contracted for- all are major issues.

You must have a particular kind of temperament to do it, and then be prepared to live on the site, more or less, while construction or interiors are going on. Not for the fainthearted, and not advisable until you have understood completely what mini-hell you are letting yourself in for.

Google Earthbag Homes or Earth Institute California. Very interesting way to build which is affordable, creative, sustainable and can offer decent shelter to all of humanity.

That is very true about the economic aspect of building a house by non residents. However It might not be the case everytime. you need to be careful about all the smarties.

Regarding building the house you need to specify which area how big and your requirements and so on... May be I can help you out with that

What's your DIY experience to date?

Can you put up a shelf straight? Can you lay bricks or blocks evenly and level? Do your pipe joints remain leak-free for years? Electrical wiring, theory, design, and practice?

Please excuse me if my cynicism is misplaced, and consider apologies given --- but if you knew all this stuff, then I wonder why you would even be asking such questions.

That's all that needs to be said.
If you are an experienced DIYer, or even have professional building experience, it will be even worse.

Quote of the project, from my house renovation. A carpenter working on the custom-made kitchen: "You didn't tell me you wanted it done properly..."

By the way... rideforever, you want to build a house... how about the land: are you Indian or Indian origin? On what basis would be buying the land?

A ressource in India is the Auroville Earth Institute
http://www.earth-auroville.com/world...duction_en.php

They realised all kinds of different projects, from a large mosque built in Saudi Arabia within 7 weeks, to a small house built in 8 days in Auroville (with pre-fabrication done earlier, though), and many more projects, all made of earthen blocks of different kinds.

They offer various trainings, from selecting the right soil, appropriate design for the climate, etc.

It ain't the latest thing though - whole villages isn't there across India made of local materials, like the earth we stand upon. Up here the soil is intermixed with stones that you can just pick up... how cheap and friendly everything is that eh!
