I can feel the love, but...

OK here's a nice one for you:

Any ideas?

I hope I am allowed to have two running at once - it was suggested that I move a thread from http://www.indiamike.com/india/showt...t=2976&page=11 to here.

OK, so here is the photo:

That's me, in case you were wondering. I'd been looking for this place for years. It took a lot of finding.

If you want to see a bigger pic, click here:

What I'd like to know is:
a/ where it actually is
b/ where it is 'supposed' to be
c/ names of 2 other people who have stood here

Sorry, not the *first* prize, though you are nearly there. :)

No, its not Gaya...

Gaya is the actual location of the Barabar Caves, that EM Forster visited, and was thinking of when he wrote the book. He re-named them the 'Marabar Caves'...

The caves are in that central, long rock-formation. As you can see, they are not very 'photogenic', so for the film, David Lean wanted a more exciting location...

Does anyone know where it is ?????????

In the film, there are two areas of caves: the 'lower' one, that Mrs Moore went into, and the 'upper' caves... The photo of me is outside the 'upper' caves, and [cry] another 'sorry' - its not Mr Fielding - he never went to that cave. Only one other person went with Dz Aziz and the guide...

Serena Dec 15th, 2005 02:36

.....Adela!

....but don't know where are those caves  maybe someone else.....

SitaParityaga Dec 15th, 2005 07:49

Sorry for the late entry.......I posted my picture on a day off from work, have since been back to work and just haven't caught up!

Lodhruva is right.

Somnath and ddutta got it right, and Luckywoman posted an excellent picture of the hole in the temple where the 100 year old cobra lives.

We were told that only men can kneel down to look in that hole. Also the snake is holy and won't hurt you, though don't go sticking your hand down the hole just the same!

What is the picture? It is an artificial tree. It remains a great mystery what the significance of the artificial tree is, and why it had a big cage around it.

Yes, Adela Quested is right. She was the one who went to the cave with Dr Aziz.

Have a look at these stills from the film:

Here they are, approaching the upper caves:
http://www.mapability.com/travel/p2i...s/145652_s.jpg
http://www.mapability.com/travel/p2i/stills/145652.jpg

and here they are outside the cave:
http://www.mapability.com/travel/p2i...s/146008_s.jpg
http://www.mapability.com/travel/p2i/stills/146008.jpg

What happened then, or didn't happen, is the pivotal point to the story.

That just leaves one question: :) Where was that photo taken ? ? ?

Are there no other fans of the film 'A Passage To India' here ?

I've never been there but I know they have some interesting rock formations in the Precambrian Amritpur Granite Series in the Kumaun Lesser Himalaya - could that be near where that famous scene and epic point of the movie took place?
