Tripod suggestion needed
Please suggest any decent (best buy) tripod model. I am not sure about the Big difference between the decent ones vs professional :-) , I have basic Benro make tripod but the basic one is not seems sturdy to hold my D40 with 18-200mm lens. Also the head moment is very restricted. Seems my demands are high but not ready to shell out money.

Get a good tripod. The horror stories about the gear going down are too painful to digest. I have witnessed a D90 + Tamron 70-200 2.8 going in sea water due to a cheap tripod.
For a budget around 5k, you can get a Benro A500FBH1, I think. Get a tripod which you can use for the next 10-15 years. Get your future gear requirements and make it a one time investment rather than multiple iterations. Don't try to load the ballhead and tripod with more than 75% of the rated capacity.

I need a tripod suggestion too, although not very urgently, as bird nesting season in my garden is over for this year.
I have just a P&S superzoom, but it goes to 1,000-equiv, and although hand-holding is not as impossible as I thought, it is very, very difficult for me to get properly aimed shots with no shake.
I have also a cheap-ish tripod, . In fact it was very cheap to me, almost free in the deal buying the camera. Its neat aspect is the removable monopod centre column. I like that, but I do not like the head: it is either loose or fixed, with no smooth way to move the camera. I don't really have a video requirement, but I do want that same smooth movement that video needs.
How about this Vanguard? currently Rs.9192 from Flipkart? Would it be much better?
I appreciate the risks gautam023 mentions about a tripod being too light weight, but I am buying to use mostly around the house and garden, and, on those occasions when it does travel, if it is too heavy, I'm going to be too lazy to take it with me

Aaha. You interpreted me wrong. I never said light tripod is bad. It can be definitely sturdy, especially when it is made from Carbon Fiber. Check this out Light & Sturdy.

Just get one which supports around twice the load that you have. For a PnS the total weight would be not more than 1 kg, I presume. For that kind of load, the basic Benro would suit. It had cost my friend around 5,500 I think. Let me get the actual model number. I have used it and it is very good. He has been mounting his full frame on it for quite some time now.
That Hama is a sure recipe for disaster. The incident that I witnessed had an identical tripod as the culprit.
@rshaldar: Google Gaffarbhai. He gives good rates on those Benros.
Thanks for the clarification. For starters, my Hama is now forbidden from going near water
.
Yes, got you on the rigidity v weight thing.
rshalder, I had seen that model, but the video made sense of how it works and made it look really useful.
Advice on heads? I do not want something where, if you loosen a screw, the camera falls over! But nor do I need the full fluid-head smoothness of video, although I can't see it would be bad, even for still photography.

There are so many different variables that come into play when choosing a tripod: How tall should it be? How light should it be? How stable should it be? What kind of weight can it support?
*To increase sharpness and depth of field in your images by keeping the camera still in low-light environments when using slow shutter speeds.
*To rest heavy camera gear such as long telephoto lenses on the tripod.
*To increase the quality of the images by keeping the camera ISO low.
*To allow more careful composition, while framing the shot exactly how you want it.
