Get your cameras and walking shoes out and prepare to join TOI on a Street Photography Trail through the lanes and bylanes of the capital.

It is an illusion that photos are made with the camera... They are made with the eye, heart and head,“ said Henri Cartier-Bresson, the first name in candid photography. For Cartier-Bresson, photography was all about capturing moments in time, and that is also the aim of our next Times Passion Trail that will help participants capture Delhi in photographs.
The Times Passion Street Photography Trail that starts on October 7 is not about the latest cameras, lenses, accessories and software. It is not a trigger-happy, shoot-first-askquestions-later jamboree.Rather, it is an old-school pursuit of the eye-hearthead principle. The idea is to see (not just glimpse), be aware of the feelings the scene inspires, think how best you can express those feelings in a picture, and only then click.

Our experience architect for the trail, London-based photographer Nick Fleming, is steeped in these values. “It is sometimes so much more worthwhile not to pursue a photograph the instant I find myself in a situation where the possibility may arise,“ says Nick.“I just have to believe that a better picture can be attained by investing the time to achieve it.“ India is Nick's favourite shooting ground. From sadhus at the Kumbh to Nihangs in Punjab; Rajasthan and Kashmir; the Ganges at Gaumukh and the river island of Majuli--he has formed bonds with them all.

The experience begins with a visit to Sanjay Akhara on the banks of the Yamuna at Majnu ka Tila. The akhara is a tradi tional nursery of wrestlers run almost like an ancient ashram. Smoking, drinking and sex are forbidden to the learners. Even the soil is held sacred and enriched with ghee before bouts. It is a place rich in atmosphere, and while the wrestlers hone their skills early morning, our trail participants will cap ture their fury and grace.
