Hi,

Couldn't find an appropriate forum for discussion on camera and equipments , so posted it here , if there is one moderators may move this topic to the appropriate forum.

I was looking for a telephoto long lens ( 400mm / 500mm ) for a while but the prices of these lenses are way beyond my pocket right now .

The options for me :
1) Buy a Teleconverter ( oem or third party ?) : is it worth , is there any loss of sharpness ?

2) There are many cheaper third party lens available online but are manual focus like Bower , are there good enough to spend money ?

https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/produ...ual_Focus.html

3) Buy second hand from olx / jj mehta : is it safe ? I bought once a sigma lens from jj mehta but the autofocus didnt work and i had to sell it off.

Any input will be appreciated.

State your budget and mention the body upon which the lens will be mounted. TCs cause minor to severe IQ loss , depending upon the make. Don't waste your money on long manual teles, few modern DSLRs are made for manual focusing and you will be severely crippled.
I can't tell about OLX but JJmehta has plenty of reliable sellers , if in doubt alway check personally before buying.
Cheapest long tele that works moderately well is sigma 150-500. Above that you can buy tamron 150-600. Above that range is nikon 300 f4 non vr + 1.4 TC or the new 200-500 VR. Canon users can choose between 400 f5.6 / 100-400 / 300+1.4 TC.
Cheers
Somnath

Himadri, you are spot on - on right Forum...!

Won't suggest Teleconverter! Don't like the output...

If you want to go for second hand, you must take at least a dozen or so images and check the result. There are plenty of factors while purchasing second hand lenses!
