Hello friends,

I am new to this forum and this is my first post.

Well, I am going to a cycling expedition organised by Youth Hostels, and want to buy a point and shoot camera to carry with me. I am very novice in photography. Earlier I had used some very basic P&S film camera and now have been using my Samsung S3 phone camera.

My basic requirements are -
- decent optical zoom, at present obviously I am not able to capture birds little far away from me with my phone camera.

- should be able to shoot in low light of early morning & evening.

- ability to charge with power bank, I have seen cameras where you need to remove battery and put into adapter to charge. I want to charge with my power bank.

- should be able to capture moving objects immediately on click (something called like sports mode). I had used my friend's camera while travelling, when clicked it was adjusting/focusing itself and captured after a couple of seconds.

My budget is approx 8k. Please suggest me any camera accordingly. Also, please let me know what should I check in camera specs. I shall be using my camera mainly for travelling and treks / cycling.

Thanks in advance.

Help me buy a P&S Camera

Sigh! No suggestions!

Well I searched myself and found Canon Powershot SX600 and Nikon Coolpix S7000, mostly suits my needs (just based on info on net). Both are above my budget, but I think I shall need to increase my budget. Can anyone please shed some light on features of these models? I understand that Canon can not be charged with power bank, not sure about Nikon.

It would be appropriate if you visit a store and self-test multiple cameras.

Please go back to home.

Again come back after a week and repeat the exercise...

Then decide on the model which you may go for...

Help me buy a P&S Camera

Thanks friend, its always a good practice to visit a store and hand look the models, but I am totally newbie and don't know anything about what to check in camera. All I know about is whatever I searched off the web, most guidance on web are for SLRs, couldn't find much detail for entry level p&s. If you guys please guide me about few technical terms or draw me to few links thereof, atleast I shall be able to compare various models myself.

dipz74, welcome to IndiaMike

The best site for technical details and comparison between the latest models is:

https://www.dpreview.com/

You will learn a lot. What you need is a compact bridge camera. They key factors are the sensor size, lens clarity and portability. Read through that bumff and then ask here if you need further clarification.

You won't go far wrong with a Panasonic or Canon bridge camera for your purposes.

Try http://snapsort.com/compare or https://www.dpreview.com/products/co...ras?ref=footer

You know, ability to charge with power bank should never be your criterion for a camera selection. It is better to buy an extra battery and keep it handy.

Lightbulb

Try and buy one with "anti shake" feature. You'll find this useful for quick shots when cycling.

You could consider a second hand one as many camera shops do exchanges and trade-ins.

Definitely I need this feature. Btw, what they call technically for 'antishake'? I couldn't find this term mentioned for any! Is it - image stabilisation?

Yes, it is image stabilisation. And you may find it mentioned on lens (of Canon cameras).

One of my friend has Nikon P600 and want to sell it off (at 15k) as he is buying DSLR. Views on this are welcome. Should I go for it?

If you google, you will find it's current price is Rs 18,920/-, and it is Rs 23,950/- on Nikon's official website...

I would have gone for a new one...

But, even better could be a newer model in COOLPIX series

Sorry, but I couldn't find this model in sale anymore. Even to check the specs, I needed to check Nikon's US website. It also mentioned 'not in retail sale'.

Can you please share the links?
