I am happy with my Sony steady shot DSC-S2100. 12.1 mp, 3x optical zoom.

What features are you looking for the entry level camera?

My current toy is a Panasonic Lumix ! Great pocket camera with a decent Leica lens. For an entry level cameras; all the major manufacturers do aOK. Two things to keep in mind - Re-usables. Batteries, and storage. They vary depending upon the kind.

Nikon and Canon are overhyped but they are the kings in DSLR's and high end segment.

It said "only good brands" so I commented how some brands are overhyped.

Since you have a great understanding of cameras, You do not need any help here - Really.

1. Go to your favorite store, whereever you live
2. Seek out a pretty sales girl.
3. Ask her same question as you have asked here
4. She'll select models under 10K, Give you all the predisposed customer driven comparative sales drivel
5. You'll shell out 10K, she'll get a bit of a commission.
6. Everyone is happy.

Pick Nikon Coolpix or Canon Powershot under 10K ;)
