Do as I say, not as I do!

Do as I say, not as I do! Dump Win Doze !

Memory is cheap ! Storage is cheap. Get a laptop (any decent NVIDIA Quadro graphics card should do) with good Cache. Have your local office geek replace memory with 32G memory, and a 1TB drive.

Now Dump LightRoom use Dark Table. If you have used Photoshop, then use Gimpshop, or just go with the real McCoy - Gimp. Also install inkScape, and Krita !

Ignore all other suggestions Since you will not be printing 48" output of your photographs, laptop resolution of 3840 by 2160 is plenty.

It's a good few years since I built my machine. Yes, most of it has been good, but I have to ask the machine what it is: I don't remember!
CPU: AMD Phenom II X4 955 3200
RAM: I think I used to have 4Gb and added 8 to make 12.
Graphics: was on-board, added Nvidia GeForce GT710
The upgrade to the memory and the new graphics card really rejuvenated the system. And it isn't even a fancy graphics card. A lot cheaper than a new computer.

If you already have a desktop, by the way, keep the case and maybe the power supply. I am on my second power supply in this system, due to a failure, but will probably never buy another case. You can't treat laptops like that. Just as long as the latest generation of motherboards actually fits... you have a case. People tend to over-spec power supplies, so that is probably good too. Working hard disks, of course... another item not to replace.

This is just as true if your system is branded. Post mother-board failure, my "Compaq" had not been a Compaq for some time.

I don't really do hardware any longer; I can't be bothered. There is an excellent mainenance company just nearby, they are much better at fault finding than I am, and I call them for hardware upgrades too. But I still have to handle the Linux stuff.
Life gets aadhar every day.

I was thinking along the same lines recently about getting a new computer. I'd given away my desktop to an NGO last year (a beast of a rig, a black edition AMD Phenom processor and 32 gigs of ram at that. ) and will soon loose the use of the office laptop as well.

I finally decided on trying to get by on a lowly raspberry pi instead of worrying about i5's and i7's and windows licenses and what not. While i wont want to do any image editing or video processing, any programming I do would be python code that will mostly run on the cloud. :P

Though was quite tempted by msft surface -
Since a job candidate mentioned using it in glowing terms I too have been interested. I'll check out US prices.
I'll second KMalik on memory. Sometimes expanding it later is very expensive unless you can salvage it from a discard. I am doing that to build my 64 gig machine. I pray each part works as I add it in as I can't diagnose problems afterwards. My last hardware hacking was eons ago..
