Hi ,

I am moving to India and planning to take my dog (2 yrs old Lab) with me. I am in touch with an agent in India for pet relocation. He will be getting me an NOC.
I have few questions :

1. Which flight is the best for pet relocation ? ( I am flying to Delhi). I have read good reviews about Luthansa but they just allow one check-in baggage.
2. Should I take my dog as checked baggage or should I send him through Cargo ?
3. What all vaccination certificate do I need other than Rabies ?
4. Do I need separate certificates from Vet for India (customs) and airline ?

-Thanks in advance,
Gaurav

My favorite feature of the site is the related threads below. There may be some valuable information and in following links. My cousin in Delhi is a big Lab enthusiast as I have become. Best of travels..

You are right. But, we should get a few people with more recent experience shortly. A lot of people relocate and take their pets..

I would go for LUthansa airlines as I used them myself. You can read my story here: http://www.indiamike.com/india/pets-...ondon-t234007/

You wouldn't be able to take your dog on board if the weight of the crate and the dog together is more than 8kg but you can check him/her in as baggage and after landing collect your pet from Cargo department-be patient, it is a long process). It might also be that you will land in another terminal and will have to take a taxi to the terminal where there is cargo department-that is what happened to me.

In terms of documentation, you can get 2 copies of all certificates that you have- just in case. Luthansa, for instance, didn't even check our rabies vaccination certificate from Indian vet when we were flying from Delhi to EU.

- update :
My dog is around 75 lbs and he will fit in a large kennel - arnd 30 lbs , so total 105 lbs, spoke with following airlines (NYC to DEL) :

Lufthansa : Cannot take dog as check-in baggage, weight limitations, had a word with Lufthansa Cargo, they don't deal with individuals directly, you need to talk to one of their agents, they quoted $3000

United Airlines : Allow pets as check-in baggage, they quoted around $1100

Emirates : Doesn't allow pets over 75lbs as check-in baggage. Their cargo department doesn't deal with individuals directly, you have to go through an agent. Agent quoted $3800

KLM : Doesn't allow pets over 165 lbs as check-in baggage. So I can take my dog in . They quoted $200

comments please ?

Regards,
Gaurav

What comments do you want? I think it is pretty obvious that the best option in terms of price is the last one-KLM. Do you agree?

Luthansa charged us 5300 rupees, which is 53 pounds only but that is because my cat is a bit over 3 kg(she is almost 10 months now). With a dog it is more difficult in terms of transportation.

Anyway, you are lucky that you found the route, so find out what papers they want from you.

By the way, yes, the system is silly-cargo departments always want an agent as they want to make money(international flights). As I sent her from Trivandrum to Delhi as cargo, they had no problem as it was a domestic flight.
