Hi, I hope I have got this question in the right forum.

I dont know exactly where I am going yet but will be going to Delhi on the 4th February and want to go along the Ganges eg Rishikesh and Varanasi and down to Colkatta but also I want to go up to the hills in Darjeeling and perhaps also north of Rishikesh as have heard there are good spiritual sites in the mountains at the source of the Ganges.

I have not been to India before and dont know if it will be hot or cold. I think the time I am going (4th Feb to 10th March) will be Spring.

I was going to take some Merrell shoes and buy some Sandals as I think it might be cold and wet in some parts (Delhi looks cold at the moment). Also I do like walking in the countryside so though shoes might be a good idea?

Also I was going to take a thin goretex waterproof to use if it rains as that is good in the English summer, also going to take a hoody sweatshirt and a very thin coat (only weighs about 400g). Also was going to take some thin trousers rather than jeans, is that a good idea or would jeans be better in the hills?

As you can tell I have no idea what to expect! People say it is hot but then I hear that the area to the north of Rishikesh is closed with snow during the Winter?

All the places that you have mentioned would be cold. A normal sneaker should be good enough with a sandal for walk during the evenings if you are going out of the hotel for dinner. There could be occasional rains in the hills. Jeans would be good idea for the weather. Check wunderground or accuweather for current temperature in the cities.

Thanks, so I think its ok to take some shoes and jeans then. I'm not taking much and can wear the shoes and jeans on the airplane anyway.

Ok thanks I have had a look at the forecasts, Rishikesh is 20c with 5c at night, that is like early summer in England.

Looks like Delhi is about 22c in February. However I have just looked at Darjeeling and it says yesterday was 2c and -21c at night!

Wow a big difference in between the hills and the plains. Perhaps I will leave Darjeeling to near the end of my trip at the first few days of March as perhaps it will have warmed up a bit.

I was in Delhi / Rajasthan in Feb last year, I didn't find it too cold. Like you said 20c is summer time in UK! In fact some days I thought it was too warm. I wore a thin micro fleece jumper in the mornings and didn't need anything warmer.

I never wore my raincoat in India (although maybe it would be useful in Darjeeling area). Good suggestion to leave this area until March, that was my plan too but I just couldn't fit it into the itinerary.

Have a great trip!

Where your fleece will come in handy will be during the nights. Depending on your budget, if you end up in low to mid tier establishments (up-to INR 3000 typically), there wont be any heating. At night, if you're doing sightseeing or even in the hotel, you'd need something warm.

Ok thanks, sounds like I need to plan for cold nights and warm days. It also sounds like I might not need my rain jacket, its only light though so might take it if I have room.
