I have a family function in Kolkatta on 25th of Dec and was planning to fly to guwahati for a week and spend a week in there. I would be travelling with my wife and another couple and three kids aged 1,2 and 6 respectively. Needed to know following information;
1. What about weather there in guwahati/shillong/kaziranga. Would it be very cold for my 1 year old kid.
2. what best to cover. I am currently planning to fly to guwahati on sunday from kolkata; spend two days in guwahati; then go to kaziranga on tuesday, spend 2 days there and return on friday; still would have one extra day. is there something on way to kaziranga, where we can spend an extra day.
3. Are there any other option in NE which would be good but not very cold. Am thinking of maybe spending a day in a tea estate, if that is possible.

If you are willing to do the Kaziranga part first, consider flying to Tezpur directly (airfare is about the same as Guwahati).

While in Guwahati be sure to do the river cruise over Brahmaputra.
Two roads diverged in a wood and I I took the one less traveled by.

We visited Guwahati, Kaziranga, Tezpur and Jorhat earlier this year.
The report I made about this you find here, maybe it gives you some ideas.

hey thanks for the response. I asked around a few of my frends who belong to assam, and they said that there is nothing to do there and the good places to go n NE are shillong and gangtok or arunachal.
i have been to gangtok and i found it pretty good. shillong, have heard is too cold in december around christmas, and hence may not have much to spend a week in assam. Just want your views whether it would be worthwhile to spend a week in guwahati/kaziranga or just head back from kolkata itself. or is there some place else which i might have missed out.

May be you can think of travelling around excellent forests of Assam like Manas, Orang, Nameri, Kaziranga. All are in plains and shouldn't have unbearable cold. All are accessible from Guwahati and you may choose one or few of them depending on the way you want to enjoy your time.

Really depends on what your interest is. There are many options you could look at, Guwahati- Majuli - Kaziranga or Guwahati- Kaziranga- Shillong or Guwahati -Shillong - Mawlynnong- Cherrapunjee.

Shillong would be quite cold in December with temperature plummeting to 7 degrees in the night.

Jorhat is the nearest town to reach Manuli.

By car it is less then 2 hours from Kaziranga

It would take around two hours from Kaziranga to Nimati Ghat from where you catch the ferry for Majuli. The temperature in Cherapunjee and Mawalnnong would nearly be the same, around 17 to 20 degrees during the day time.

I am making the same trip this 31st Oct and will be able to share the trip report once I am back. Following is my itinerary if that is of any use to you:
Day 1 - Fly to Guwahati. Night stay at Guwahati
Day 2 - Morning visit Kamakhya Temple and then start for Kaziranga. Night stay at Kaziranga
Day 3 - Early morning take the Elephant Safari and after lunch the Jeep Safari. Night Stay at Kaziranga.
Day 4 - Move to Shillong. Evening free to roam around and Night stay at Shillong.
Day 5 - Shillong Sight Seeing.
Day 6 - Move to Cherapunji. Night stay at Cherapunji
Day 7 - Trek the Root Bridges trails. Night stay at Cherapunji
Day 8 - Day free to relax. Night stay at Cherapunji
Day 9 - Start for Shillong Airport and fly back to Kolkata.

Note:
1) If time is an issue, you can do away with the Cherapunji part whatsoever, as Cherapunji is covered in the regular sight seeing trips from Shillong. I just wanted to relax and stay a bit close to nature, so included the night stays at Cherapunji.
2) I am touching Guwahati just to visit the Kamakhya temple. But if that is not something you intend to visit, then as rightly said by one of the fellow IMer, it is better to fly directly to Tezpur. That way you will save a day as well as save on the 5 hours journey from Guwahati to Kaziranga.
