Hi all - we're going to Pushkar on the 24th of November. We arrive at noon. We want to go to the camel fair but a little worried that it might be closing down and coming to an end as we arrive. Can anyone tell us when the best time to go is and the best time to avoid? Can't wait to go... or should we head to Chandrabhaga Fair on the 26th instead?
Thanks everyone

The pushkar fair this year will end on Nov 25th and indeed it will be dusty and a bit 'done' by the time you get there. Typically the fair is ten days but in reality, traders arrive earlier than the start date. The program for tourists starts from 18th and will conclude on 25th. So it really depends on your interest - if you're looking for cultural programs, 25th is still good. However, if the idea is to have a leisurely visit, my suggestion would be Chandrabhaga. I've been to Jhalrapatan and Jhalawar area and it is as such a lot less touristy than Pushkar. If you arrive on say 24th in that area, you could spend time checking out the local temples (3 major ones in Jhalrapatan alone) plus the fort of Gagron and then visit the fair.

Thank you Vaibhav_arora!

We are a Scottish/Australian couple so were a bit worried that the Chandrabhaga fair might be a bit too local (by that, I mean more about trading livestock than having lots of variety on things to see and do). But if you recommend it, then we'll definitely check it out. We're heading from Udaipur to the fair, then to the Well Steps for a day and up to Ladakh for a week. We'll have just got married down in Goa (we met there many many moons ago) so it'll be nice to see the north of the country since we've spent all previous trips down the south.

The only problem i can think of is you not being able to understand some of the ceremonies due to the language barrier. If that doesn't bother you then go ahead. There's more than livestock trading, some prayer ceremonies by the river for example. Also, the area has more to see than Pushkar - this flickriver link may help - http://www.flickriver.com/places/Ind...n/Jhalrapatan/ (all the procession photos with people decked up are from the fair). Hope you've booked up accommodation - it gets filled up fast as there isn't a whole lot in that town.

Hi vaibhav!

If i want to have a feel of both the cattle fair and the mela, will 22-24 Nov be a good slot? And, if I'm going to travel alone, what may be the inexpensive stay options available in Pushkar? would you suggest that I pre book? Will it be a good idea or is it possible to pitch our own tents somewhere there?

The cattle fair and the more touristic programs run hand in hand for most days. The animal traders arrive earlier than the touristic programs begin, thats all. So check the dates accordingly. 22-24 should be good enough. No clue about the accommodation as am not a huge fan of pushkar.

I was in Pushkar many moons ago.

I arrived long before the poornima, and there was plenty to see as the camels arrive early and was able to walk around freely, also accommodation was reasonable as they hike the prices up astronomically later
