I note for future reference that you and K.S. had booked way ahead for the Kohima hotel and that you mention in your photo annotations that the majority of the hotels are booked solidly SIX months ahead of the Festival! That is important to know about. I must admit that I am not very tempted to taste the hornet larvae, Naga delicacy.

Of all the dancers in your snaps, the Mizoram girls stand out as being the prettiest!

The museum looks very interesting, but your walk around the hills looks even more so.

I will study these pics more carefully later. Thank you so much.
Thanks for your appreciation of pictures.
If you plan to visit Khonoma village which, in my view, is a 'must visit' place, plan for an overnight stay in the village to get a feel of the village life. After taking a walking tour of the village, I felt that an overnight stay in the village would have given us more opportunity to inter-act with the villagers.

Yes Mizo girls were the prettiest! not only the girls in the dance-team at Hornbill in Kohima, but even the girls who remained home in Aizawl and Champhai in Mizoram!!

If you plan to attend Hornbill Fest Dec-2012, book hotel before april-2012. Hotel Cimborg (0370-2242248 or 9436211648) is one of the best and I would recommend them.

My Northeast Tour to Nagaland, Cachar (Assam), Tripura, Mizoram, Meghalaya

.
More or less did the entire tour as planned; a month long tour of 5 states in northeast. Had to skip Manipur due to blockade.

It was a fun trip and I enjoyed it thoroughly. We left on 28th Nov 2011; Sadanand Kamath (SK) was with me for the first part i.e. Nagaland (Hornbill) and then Tripura. After SK left on 11th Dec from Agartala, I continued the tour to visit Mizoram and Meghalaya. On the way back made a week stopover in Kolkata and met some of the Kolkata IM-ers.

Here is a brief day-wise summary of the entire tour:

28th Nov 2011 (Day-1): Mumbai to Kolkata Indigo flight. N/H at Airways Lodge near airport

29th Nov 2011 (Day-2): Kolkata to Dimapur (with 1 stop at Dibrugarh) by Air India. Landed at 13:30 took an auto to Dimapur taxi-stand near Railway station to catch a share-taxi to Kohima. Stay in Kohima at Hotel Cimborg for 6 nights.

30th Nov 2011 (Day-3): Kohima local sight seeing Raj-Bhavan, DC Heritage Residence, Kohima WWII Cemetery, Bazaar, State Museum.

1st Dec 2011 (Day-4): Hornbill Festival (day-1) at Kisama Heritage Village

2nd Dec 2011 (Day-5): Hornbill Festival (day-2) at Kisama Heritage Village

3rd Dec 2011 (Day-6): Day trip in a reserved taxi to Khonema Village

4th Dec 2011 (Day-7): Hornbill Festival (day-4) at Kisama Heritage Village

5th Dec 2011 (Day-8): Kohima to Dimapur by share taxi. Dimapur Kachari Reign ruins. Train to Lumding. N/H at Lumding in Hotel Global.

6th Dec 2011 (Day-9): Lumding to Silchar via Haflong by the MG train - Barak Valley Express (see: SK Report) - through scenic hilly terrain of Barak valley of Cachar, Assam. N/H at Silchar in Hotel Borail

7th Dec2011 (Day-10): Silchar to Agartala by MG-train Agartala Passenger cutting across Cachar, Assam and along Tripura's border with Bangladesh via Badarpur, Karimganj and Dharmanagar. N/H in Ginger Hotel for 4 nights

8th Dec 2011 (Day-11): Day-trip in Hired taxi to South Tripura to Sipahijala (WLS & Zoo), Neer-Mahal on Rudra Sagar lake, Udaipur, Matabari (Tripureshwari temple).

9th Dec 2011 (Day-12): Day-trip in hired taxi to Unakoti (huge Monoliths carved on rock-faces) thru North Tripura & Dhalai districts of Tripura.

10th Dec 2011 (Day-13): Agartala Local sights – Rajar-bari (palace), Jagannath Temple, Lakshmi Narayan temple etc.

11th Dec 2011 (Day-14): SK flew back to Mumbai from here. I caught a morning train to Dharamapur. And from there by a share-Sumo to Silchar. N/H at Sudakshina Hotel.

12th Dec 2011 (Day-15): Roaming around in dirty, dusty, down town of Silchar. Just a commercial centre; nothing much to see except the chaotic bustle of a NE hub-town.

13th Dec 2011 (Day-16): Share Sumo from Silchar to Aizawl (Mizoram) 9 hour scenic ride; reaching Zarkot Chowk in Aizawl at 16:30. Checked into Hotel Tropicana near sumo/taxi stands. Evening walk through Aizawl’s bazaar streets teeming with happy Mizos Christmas shopping in lit-up streets

14th Dec 2011 (Day-17): Day Trip by hired-taxi to Reiek Model Village (40KM) amazing display of model Mizo Homes in a village-setting, river views and State Museum. Visited KV paradise but was dark by then and closed.

15th Dec 2011 (Day-18): 9-hour Share Sumo ride to Champhai near Burma border. Awesome ride through green forests and hilly terrain. N/H at Champhai Mizoram Tourist G/H for 2 nights.

16th Dec 2011 (Day-19): Day-trip in a hired taxi from Champhai to Ridhil Lake, some 5 KM inside Burma border. Nice ride through hilly terrain and awesome misty views.

17th Dec 2011 (Day-20): Share-sumo repeat scenic ride back to Aizawl. Return sumos were running empty while onward ones to Champhai were overloaded, with Mizos going home for Christmas.

18th Dec 2011 (Day-21): Share-sumo scenic ride back to Silchar. N/H at same Sudakshina Hotel

19th Dec 2011 (Day-22): 12-Hour share-sumo ride from Silchar to Shillong thru scenic Jaintia Hills of East Meghalaya. N/H in LamLyn Hotel in GS road for next 6 nights.

20th Dec 2011 (Day-23): Local Taxi to visit Don Bosco Museum of North East. Surpised by quality of Museum displays of entire North East cultures and artefacts. Awesome place requiring a minimum 4-5 hours of cursory walk through the 7 story 16 galleries museum.

21st Dec 2011 (Day-24): Shillong city sight-seeing tour (Meghalaya Tourism Coach) to Ward Lake, Golf Course, Don Bosco Church, Hydari Park, Shillong Peak etc.

22nd Dec 2011 (Day-25): Day Trip (Tourism coach tour) to Cherrapunji. Maw Dok Valley view, Eco-Park, Noshitiang Falls (running dry!), Mawsmai Caves, Monoliths, Thangkarang Park, Ramakrishna Mission, Nokhalikai Falls etc.

23rd Dec 2011 (Day-26): Shillong local walks in Police Bazaar & Bara Bazaar shopping areas with Christmas shopping crowds.

24th Dec 2011 (Day-27): Day Trip in hired share-taxi to Mawlynnong Cleanest Asian Village. Bamboo Skywalk to tree-tops for Bangladesh plains view and Riwai Root bridge crossing a stream.

25th Dec 2011 (Day-28): Shillong walk around in bazaar areas on Christmas Day.

26th Dec 2011 (Day-29): 4-Hour Share taxi ride from Shillong to Guwahati Airport. On the way stopped at Barapani (lake) for some pictures. Indigo flight to Kolkata.

[ 27th Dec 2011 to 3rd Jan 2012: In Kolkata meeting all old friends and few IMers. ]

Will update my blog with detailed stories & pictures and will post a link here. It will take me a while to process the pictures and write the stories. Maybe even 3-4 weeks!

Thanks to all IM members who posted their tips and advice on this NE trip in the earlier posts on this thread.

KS and SK:

congratulations and a very happy new year.
Though you had to miss Manipur, the trip looks wonderful.
Manipur and Arunachal should be on your next trip.

KS and SK,

thank you for the great reports and pictures....

i am looking into a possibility of a such trip either in december or sep/oct of next year.....it has been well over a year since i have been in the vicinity and was wondering if you could answer a couple of questions, that address issues i had problems with before...

i cannot travel without a stable internet connections, so these issues are important to my planning

1. was your mtnl sim, a prepaid or postpaid...
2. on the same line, which carriers seem to offer the best coverage in the area...
3. also would you be able to make any other recommendation as to mobile internet coverage..

thanks in advance,
sb

A1:My MTNL SIM on the smartphone was prepaid and loaded with 98/- monthly 1GB data option; I got voice and data signals (2G) almost everywhere I visited in NE. My 2nd mobile with Vodafone prepaid-SIM (voice only) seemed to work most places; but not as well as MTNL everywhere.

My Netbook with Reliance CDMA USB-dongle worked no-where, as entire Reliance network in Northeast is GSM only. I was given wrong information (by Reliance Telcomm central Customer-Care) that it would work in entire NE ... but local Reliance shops confirmed that only a GSM dongle works in Northeast.

A2: I think a laptop with MTNL 2G/GPRS USB-dongle should work everywhere. Possibly a Reliance GSM-dongle may work everywhere. I saw people using Tatafone dongle laptops in Agartala.

A3: With your laptop, if you carried a postpaid BSNL-GSM-USB and a postpaid Reliance-GSM you should be well covered in most of NE. If you also carried a 3rd one of Tatafone-USB you will be totally safe, I think

MTNL (Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Limited) is just the Mumbai (and Delhi) versions (independent divisions) of BSNL (Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd). You probably know that BSNL is the old Govt Telecomm coy. So practically MTNL = BSNL

oh i see....so theoretically my bsnl prepaid = an mtnl prepaid, and the same should apply to my prepaid dongle...

@sb

Please note: my MTNL(=BSNL) feedback is about prepaid GSM SIM on a smartphone, with a 2G/GPRS Data-Plan.

I am not sure how exactly that translates to a BSNL-prepaid dongle on a laptop/netbook.

I also feel the 3G data service coverage may not be as good as the slower 2G/GPRS one, that I had.

I get a feeling that most Telecomm Companies have not extended 3G coverage beyond big metros and cities tll date. Also now there is a controversy raging between Telcom companies and TRAI on the legality of 3G-Roaming across different networks!
