Friends,
We are four senior citizens (bet 56 and 70) who want to travel from Mumbai to Tawang and surrounding area, Shillong and Cherrapunji. We will be travelling between 24'th March and 4'th April. Considering that all of us are pretty fit and travel regularly, can you please help us in finalizing itinerary? Any help with itinerary, Car/Cab, hotels is highly appreciated.
Will it be good to use helicopter service while coming back from Tawang?

Looking forward to your suggestions,
Regards,
Vaijayantee

Mod note
I have shifted this query to "Other Areas" since it covers more than one state in the North East.

For your Shillong/Cherrapunjee itinerary, please read the Meghalaya forum, in particular the posts by Karikor.

For your Tawang itinerary, please read the Arunachal Pradesh forum, in particular the posts by kshil and mithun.

You do not need a travel agent.

Are you planning to go by train initially? Where is your starting point for your trip? Guwahati is a good place to disembark from the train in order to reach Shillong then Cherra. But if you plan to go first to Tawang, then Tezpur is nearer.

The helicopter from Tawang to Guwahati is planned to restart, but unfortunately it has not started yet as far as I am aware.

I would fly to Guwahati, proceed directly to Shillong, then to Cherra. You have lots of accommodation choices in Shillong, from budget hotels to heritage hotels. Go for some sightseeing in Cherrapunjee and stay at the Cherrapunjee Resort. Return to Guwahati.

Then tackle the Tawang sector. Keep some days in your hand in case of bandhs.

Thank you theyyamdancer.

Coming to Mr. vskamat,

Should you need any help with Meghalaya, Khasi hills and Jaintia hills in particular, I would gladly help. Now understanding that even with your group's age being between 56 to 70, what do you look for? A relaxing holiday or with some adventure activities. And if you plan on some adventure activities, then what level of activities would you he comfortable with? And if you want help in choosing hotels and suggesting for you a suitable itinerary, I will do my best. just give me a tentative budget to play around with.

As for bandhs in arunachal Pradesh, well it is sad to say that that is the scheme of things presently especially with the agitations involving construction of huge dams displacing thousands and affecting the ecology of the area plus the concern of the region being an earthquake prone area. Hence the bandhs and protests.

Thanks a lot Karikor. Really kind of you to give the information
As far as our fitness goes, all of us are fairly fit though we would like to avoid rigorous uphill walking and treks. We would love to enjoy natural beauty. From Mumbai to Mumbai we have 11 days in hand. We can fly from Mumbai 25'th March morning and would like to be back by 4'th April night. Our budget from Guwahati to Guwahati (excluding air fare that is) can be around 20 k per person including hotel, travel and food if possible. Can you please help us with suggestions for itinerary, hotels and taxi?
TIA

So from what I see, you can spend 2 days in shillong, 3 days in sohra, 1 day in mawlynnong, 1 day in mawphlang and 1 day in umiam lake and 2 days kaziranga.
As for your budget, well other places may have limited choices of accommodation, so you may need to shell out a little bit more, but we can make up with the shillong leg.

From what I would suggest, your itinerary should be something like this.

Day 1- reach guwahati. Proceed to mawphlang. Halt
Day 2- roam around the mawphlang sacred forest. Evening head for sohra. Halt
Day 3-4 halt at sohra.
Day 5- proceed to mawlynnong.halt
Day 6- afternoon proceed to shillong halt
Day 7- shillong.halt
Day 8- umiam lake. Halt
Day 9-proceed to kaziranga.halt
Day 10- morning safari. Evening return to guwahati.
Day 11- back to Mumbai.

now if you agree with this or off you want to cut down on some locations, do feel free to do so. However you have to keep in mind that you will need to finalize the itinerary quickly as it would be too late to get accommodation later.

Il send you the list of accommodation later when you have finalized the itinerary.

Thanks for your very quick response Karikor.
Out of the above itinerary, we have been to Kaziranga a year and half ago. My other friends are saying that they would like to keep about 5/6 days for Tawang. Does following itienrary look good or it is too ambitious?
Day 01: Start from Mumbai-Reach Guwahati-Guwahati-Tezpur
Day 02: Tezpur - Bomdila
Day 03: Bomdila Tawang -Local
Day 04: Tawang-China Border
Day 05: Sight-seeing at Tawang - P.T.So lake, Sangeet So (Madhuri) lake, Tee gompha,Jang waterfalls, Heart Lake, Bumla Pass, night stay at Tawang
Day 06: Nameri
Day 07: Tawang Dirang
Day 08: Dirang, Sight-seeing at Dirang, Sangti (12 km from Dirang) and Tipi
Day 09: Dirang-Bhalukpong
Day 10: Bhalupong-Cherra
Day 11: Cherra-Shillong
Day 12: Shillong-Guwahati-Mumbai
I'm aware that it does no justice to Shillong-Cherrapunji sector. I think that sector we would cover again by December perhaps

Hi vskamat,

I must say your itinerary looks pretty packed. Would love to join in with you guys. Anyway I will not be able to comment much on Arunachal Pradesh. A few friends visited this winter, but I was not able to join them. Anyway just one point, the trip from Bhalukpong to Sohra will be very long and strenous and will take atleast 9-10 hours. So my suggestion is skip the Meghalaya leg totally. It will just be a waste of time. If you start early by 8 am also you will reach Sohra only by 6pm which would already be dark out here. Plus Sohra and SHillong will need atleast 2 dedicated days each. So why don't you spend the 1 day the you have for meghalaya in Arunachal or visit some Wildlife sanctuary close to Guwahati like Pobitro instead.

As for Meghalaya, I would not recommend December, the best time to visit is February/March and September/October. End September especially after the Monsoons, the waterfalls will be full to the brim. So do plan accordingly. December would be too cold and also daylight in December ends by 4-4.30pm.

Regards,

Karikor Kharkongor

You are most welcome to join us Karikor. Will be our pleasure!
Is it possible to go to any of Eaglnest/Pakhui/Itanagr sanctuaries? If it is possible, then we may go there instead of Meghalaya. And postpone Meghalaya for next year

Thank you for the offer.

Anyway I have heard about these sanctuaries however I am sorry I will not be able to help you with it. Please try the Arunachal Thread. Hope you get someone to clear your doubts over there. By the way, do not wait till next year for Meghalaya. Try to make it this year in the beginning of October. That would be the best time. March/April will be dry, so even all the wonderful waterfalls would have also vanished by April.
