Dear All,

I am thinking of making a trip to the north east in the last week of December. Need your help in planning the itinerary and also need suggestion for hotels and transportation.

My plan is :-

1st day :- guwahati : kamakhya mandir darshan + city tour + brahmaputra river cruise
2nd day :- guwahati - shillong . eve visit umiam lake. then roam around police bazaar
3rd day:- shillong city tour
4th day:- shillong - cherrapunji . stay at cherrapunji . go for living root bridges trek.
5th day :- cherrapunji to shillong. from there back to guwahati.

My questions are :-

1. I have 1 more day at my disposal. where can i go ? any place nearby from shillong ? pls advise.

2. If i need to go to Tawang ...how many more days i need to add to the trip ? Will Sela Pass be accessible in last week of december? I mean is Tawang a possibility ? If yes :- how can i go to Tawang.is it thru guwhati or can it be reached from shillong ?

3. please advise whether the rest of the itinerary looks good or not? please add/update as per suggestions

4. please suggest good decent and safe standard accomodations at Guwahati and Shillong . It will be great if you ca provide address, phone no and if applicable, the website.

5. Do i get shared cabs to and from guwhati-shillong ? from where in guwhati and shillong do i avail them ?

6. for the visit to umiam, shillong day tour and travel to cherrapunji, please suggest any shillong travel agent you know of who will give a reasonable transport quote.

I will be very grateful to all of you if you can please take some time out and answer my questions

Thanks,
Samrat

Sorry I cannot help!

I spent a week in Guwahati but was held prisoner (or so it seemed!) by the University that doesn't allow alcohol or smoking in their not inconsiderate grounds (Very large!)

I ignored some of the rules however (smoking and alcohol!)

shillong in last week of dec 2011. please help guys !!!

Dear All,

I am thinking of making a trip to the guwahati + shillong in the last week of December. Need your help in planning the itinerary and also need suggestion for hotels and transportation.

My plan is :-

1st day (24 dec) :- fly from kolkata to guwahati : kamakhya mandir darshan + city tour + brahmaputra river cruise

2nd day (25 dec):- guwahati - shillong . eve visit umiam lake. then roam around police bazaar

3rd day (26 dec):- shillong - cherrapunji . stay at cherrapunji . cherrapunji local sight seeing

4th day (27 dec):- mor :- living root bridges trek. after lunch -> cherrapunji to shillong.

5th day (28 dec):- shillong local sight seeing

6th day (29 dec):- shillong to guwahati. flight back to kolkata.

guwahati (1N) :- 24

shillong (3N) :- 25,27-28

My questions are :-

1. From where can I avail shared cabs from guahati to shillong police bazaar area? Is it paltan bazaar in guwahati. How much do they cost per head?

2. While returning from shillong if i want to go to the airport directly, do i get such shared cabs from shillong or do i again need to go via paltan bazaar?

3. can you please suggest a good hotel in guwahati for 1N accomodation and who can arrange for mandir darshan + city tour + river cruise? It will be great if you ca provide address, phone no and if applicable, the website.

4. can you please suggest a decent accomodation in shillong police bazzar area where the food is also quite good? Should i try for Ashutosh Inn or Hotel Micasa ?

5.Is the cherrapunji leg of the itinerary possible to execute as per plan? Please let me know your suggestions. can the root bridge treks be covered in half day period from early morning till lunch ? And will be very taxing for women? I mean can ladies also do the trek or is it very tough ?

6. what is the best way to get to cherrapunji resort from shillong ? Please advice.

7. Please advise on the probable charges of a whole day shillong local sightseeing cab tour and also please let me know the possible charge on a trip to umiam and back from shillong ?

I will be very grateful to all of you if you can please take some time out and answer my questions. I want to finalize the trip and go ahead with the bookings asap.

I went to Shillong in Oct 2008 and we had 5 full days..it fell short..I had taken inputs from several people who had been to Shillong and not but to my dismay I found that there is a lot more to see in shillong than you would imagine. A day trip to Mausinram is a must - the journey,a dn the final destination when you arrive, are out of the world..Its like Scotland, and in fact our friend and his family were with us, and he had been to Scotland. he voiced that too. Then you need a day for Cherrapunji. For sightseeing in shillong you need at least 3-4 days. there are places to see like umium lake, Shillong Peak, several falls, you need lot of time if you go to Happy Valley, then there is the butterfly musuem which we missed due to less time..churches and several other places. so my advice, do not underestimate Shillong as a short weekend destination.

Hi Samrat!!
I am sorry as I had somehow missed this thread. Anyway, here we go:-

My questions are :-

1. From where can I avail shared cabs from guahati to shillong police bazaar area? Is it paltan bazaar in guwahati. How much do they cost per head?

Shared cabs are available in plenty at Paltan Bazar area. Paltan Bazar is just behind the Guwahati Railway station. The normal charge in an Indica from Guwahati to Shillong should be Rs. 250/- per head.

2. While returning from shillong if i want to go to the airport directly, do i get such shared cabs from shillong or do i again need to go via paltan bazaar?

Just go to the Shillong Taxi stand and ask the drivers there. They may drop you to the airport after dropping other passengers at Paltan Bazar. Or else you take a shared cab from Shillong to Paltan bazar. Get down at Paltan bazar and right there you shall find many cabs that ply to Airport on shared basis. It's just outside hotel Nandan.

3. can you please suggest a good hotel in guwahati for 1N accomodation and who can arrange for mandir darshan + city tour + river cruise? It will be great if you ca provide address, phone no and if applicable, the website.

It depends on your budget. However, assuming that you are looking for a moderate budget hotel, go for Hotel Siroy Lily which is just at Paltan Bazar itself. The contact no. is +91361-2731089 and +91361-2608492. It's a decent hotel. Another option is Hotel Sagar that too at Paltan bazar. The website is: http://hotelsagarguwahati.com/contacts.html

4. can you please suggest a decent accomodation in shillong police bazzar area where the food is also quite good? Should i try for Ashutosh Inn or Hotel Micasa ?

Accomodation and fooding in Shillong will be higher in comparision to most parts of India. Given that, try hotel Broadway. It's a value for money hotel. The website is http://hotelbroadway.net/index.html
For food I would recommend you to try Bamboo Hut at Rap's mansion. Chennai junction is a decent one for South Indian at Police bazar. Hotel centre point has a restaurant which is ok.
Micasa is a high end hotel. Although I found it's location to be quite serene. It all depends on your budget.

5.Is the cherrapunji leg of the itinerary possible to execute as per plan? Please let me know your suggestions. can the root bridge treks be covered in half day period from early morning till lunch ? And will be very taxing for women? I mean can ladies also do the trek or is it very tough ?

Your itinerary for Chherapunji looks ok. Root bridges may be covered and you may reach Shillong on the same day. If your wife doesnt have any heart related ailments then she would easily do it.

6. what is the best way to get to cherrapunji resort from shillong ? Please advice.

Go to Shillong Taxi stand and look for a shared cab from there. Many cabs ply between Shillong and Chherapunji on both shared and reserved basis.

7. Please advise on the probable charges of a whole day shillong local sightseeing cab tour and also please let me know the possible charge on a trip to umiam and back from shillong ?

My advice to you would be to cover Umiam in the morning instead of evening because Sun sets very early in this part of the world during winters. My advice to you would be to take a reserved cab for whole day and cover Shillong Peak-Elephenta falls-Museum-Wards lake-Church-Umiam. The cab should charge you somewhere around 2 to 2.5 K for a day trip.
One more point is that Umiam lake is on the way from Guwahati to Shillong. If you take an exclusive cab from Guwahati to Shillong, you may be able to cover it in one go. You wont need to backtrack from Shillong to Umiam. Or you may cover it on the way back from Shillong to Guwahati. Do try the french fries and Pot tea at the Orchid lake resort at Umiam

I will be very grateful to all of you if you can please take some time out and answer my questions. I want to finalize the trip and go ahead with the bookings asap.

Answered in Bold. Hope it helps. Any further query is welcomed

Look Mate, every individual has his/her own defination of beauty. What seems beautiful to me may not appeal to you. So, for me two days in total at Shillong should be ok given the time of the year. Below I've drafted an itinerary for you. You may add/delete or modify it to your liking:-

Day 1:- Reach Guwahati. Visit Kamakhya, Balaji etc.

Day 2:- Leave from Guwahati for Shillong. Relax at Shillong.

Day 3:- Shillong local site seeing. Evening at Shillong.

Day 4:- Visit Umiam lake. Opt for water sports if interested. There is also an option of an overnite campfire on an island near the lake.

Day 5:- Leave for Chherapunji. Visit Nohkalikai Falls-Nohsngithiang Falls-Mawsmai caves etc. Overnite at Resort.

Day 6:- Visit root bridges. Leave for Shillong. O/N at Shillong.

Day 7:- Shillong to Guwahati. Leave for home.

This seems like the best suited draft to me. If you feel, you may extend your stay at Cherrapunji by one day and visit Mawsinram.

Hi,

Include a day trip to Mausinram - the journey is very beautiful as well the as the final destination. We had visited in 2007 (not 2008) and there was no place to eat or stay. We had packed food from Shillong and had it once we reached, and also had packed breakfast on the way.

We had gone for a day trip to cherrapunji and did not stay over at night, but you can.

Mausmai cave is worth visiting, though I cannot recall whther that was on way to Cherrapunji or Mausinram or a seperate day trip.

Keep a day for Shillong Peak, Musuem, Wards Lake, Church etc. For elephant falls, Umium Lake, you would need a seperate day. Additionally if you can pack in a day, you can go to Happy Valley.

Hi!!

I am sorry but I felt the need to correct it. Shillong Peak and Elephanta falls are just a few Km's from each other. Infact both are covered in one stretch generally.

Umiam lake is 30 Km's from peak. So you do not need a seperate day to visit these places. But if someone is interested in water sports at the lake, then one may opt for a day-long trip.

Mawsmai caves are a part of day long Cherapunji site-seeing. No extra day is required for it.

For Mawsinram, as I mentioned earlier, it depends on person's personal preference of beauty. If I had to plan for Cherapunji, I would skip Mawsinram as It does'nt appeal me. I would rather go for Living root bridges and the double decker bridges.

I can understand that you may have posted your personal experience, but trust me, tourists are sometimes shown what the drivers-agents want them to see. Hope it clears up the air

Hi Mate!!

From your post I could figure out that you have 3 days in hand excluding the first and last day which is reserved for arrival and departure. In my opinion you are trying to cover too much in too less time. You would be better off trying to cover either one of Meghalaya or Kaziranga. Trying to cover both shall be a bit too much given the limited time you have.
My personal preference would be Meghalaya. However, that takes nothing away from Kaziranga. It's a wonderful place indeed.

P.S:- If possible, try and prepone your trip by a few days and try to spend Christmas in Shillong. It becomes a completely different place during that time
