Folks, My wife and I have about a week and would love to visit this part of the world. We do not like crowds but love nature. Here is our planned itinerary:
Day 1: Fly from Ahmedabad to Guwahati. Spend the night there.
Day 2: By road to Kaziranga National Park
Day 3: Kaziranga National Park
Day 4: By road to Shillong. Overnight stay there.
Day 5: Go the Cherrapunjee and explore. Back to Shillong for overnight stay.
Day 6: By road to Guwahati. Explore for the rest of the day.
Day 7: Fly back to Ahmedabad.

Suggestions would be very welcome to this itinerary. Also input regarding places to stay, visit and thing to do would be highly appreciated.

I like your proposed itinerary, although it is a bit rushed. At Kaziranga I recommend staying at the Jupuri Ghar, which is a fairly new resort, mid-price range. At Cherrapunjee, the Cherrapunjee Holiday Resort, owned by Dennis and his wife Carmen, is the best place to stay. In Shillong, it depends on your budget. If you have a higher budget, I recommend the Tripura Castle, which is slightly out of town. Otherwise, there are many cheaper hotels in town near to the Police Bazaar area.

If you can re-arrange your itinerary, my suggestion would be to add one more night in Cherra. It is more interesting by far than Shillong, especially if you are interested in nature more than crowds. Shillong is horrendously noisy and full of traffic. It is an interesting place, but since you are coming all this way it is a crying shame not to see more of the beautiful nature of Cherrapunjee. The Double-Decker Living Root Bridges require a full day's trek. But there are nearer ones which require only a few hours' trek.

In Shillong itself, I recommend going to the Don Bosco Museum, which showcases all of the tribal artefacts and history of the entire North East.

Also in Shillong, don't miss seeing the Archery stakes. Really good fun! (No need to place a bet, just enjoy watching.)

Thanks a lot for this info. Have you got any good tips on where to stay in Guwahati? Also would you recommend a travel agent (maybe in Guwahati) who can make arrangements for transportation and accommodations?

Much appreciated.

In Guwahati we stayed at the Landmark Hotel, next to the cricket ground, a comfortable mid-range hotel.

Personally I do not think you need a travel agent to organize anything. Just telephone the hotels and book them. As for transportation, cabs are plentiful at Guwahati airport. Hotels can organize each step of your way. There is no real need to book a driver ahead. If you take each step separately it would probably be cheaper than one driver for the whole way. I mean, for example, a drive from Shillong to Cherrapunjee would cost around 1,500 Rs. Sorry I cannot remember all the prices. Dennis at Cherrapunjee Resort sent a car to pick us up at Guwahati airport and bring us to Cherrapunjee. Later he also arranged a car to take us up to Shillong.

You will have a wonderful time, I am sure! Don't forget to come back and tell us here at IndiaMike all about it.
