I will be traveling from Dehli to Nepal and want to cross th eborder at Banbassa. Not much in th eguide books on how to get there. Actually, there is nothing!

Can anyone suggest a route? I am not in a great hurry and can take an extra day or two if there is someplace recomended to see along the way. And I love to ride trains, so a train trip as part of the travel would be great!

All suggestions most appreciated.

According to Lonely Planet '07, Banbassa has only meter-gauge local trains to the railhead of Bareilly.

They recommend instead a bus to/from Delhi.

They also advise to check the current situation, with regards to Maoist activity in western Nepal (that situation may have changed considerably by now I guess, but it would nonetheless be good to check), as well as roads there getting washed out in the monsoon (which, if you're traveling soon, wouldn't be a concern).

Don't know of anything of immediate interest along the way; unless you were to take a (considerable) detour into Uttarakhand (LP mentions a bus Almora-Banbassa). I reckon you'll get your share of Himalayan views in Nepal though, so little point.

I had been to Mahendranagar few months back with an American friend for his Visa renual.I suggest you to take a train from Delhi (old) at 6.00 am (4556 Delhi-Bareilly express.)so as to reach to Bareilly at 1 pm in the afternoon.Take autorikshaw to rural bus terminal ( bus adda) for RS 15 ( about 1 km). There are buses to Banbassa every 30 minutes till midnight.I had taken a bus at 1.30 in the night ! It takes about three hours to reach to Banbaasa. In case you need to spend night there you find many hotels for about Rs 300 per day ( with attached bathroom and toilet. But as all the hotels are on the main road , all are noisy all 24 hours. Then walk or take a cycle Rikshaw to Indian immigration office ( about 1 km) which is situated after the river crossing. It remains open during the day time. After completing exit formality take another cycle riksha or walk all the way (15 minutes) to Nepal immigration office. From there you will get shared auto rikshwa to Mahendranagar .
