Hi All,
I will be travelling to Shillong in October, 2010.
My train booking till Guwahati is done and I will be reaching Guwahati @ 5.20 pm thru Rajdhani.

I have the following queries:
1. Should I travel to Shillong same day evening or should I spend the night @ Guwahati and start for Shillong next day morning?
2. If I am staying @ Guwahati on day1 night, suggest me some good and decent hotels (budget 3-4K / night).
3. If I am travelling to Shillong on day2, then I plan to stay in shillong for 3 nights and 4 days i.e. day 5 Checkout. Please suggest some good and decent hotels (well rooms and bathrooms should be really clean!) - budget Rs. 3000-4000/ night.
4. I am planning for day 2 for shillong local sightseeing and relaxing - should i book a cab for local sightseeing or walking would do ?
5. I have day 3 & 4 for sightseeing - mausynram is a must.. suggest some other places too!

It will be extremely helpful if anyone helps in clarifying the above qeuries!

Guwahati Hotel Sagar
http://hotelsagarguwahati.com/
Room rate around Rs. 2000/- includes breakfast. Good south indian food.
I have stayed here for 2 nights.

Shillong

Rates above your budget - but good location.

Wait for others to answer your queries.

Royzlife,

There is no need for you to stay in Guwahati the first evening. Since you are reaching by train get down at the station and cross over to Paltan bazaar. From Paltan bazaar you will get several shared taxis going to shillong. The taxis charge Rs.190 per seat and run till late in the night, it takes around two to two and a half hours to reach Shillong.

As per you budget for Shillong , The Tripura Heritage Castle would be a wonderful place to stay, good service and classy ambiance.

Visit the Don Bosco Tribal museum while in shillong, the museum is absolutely superb. Probably one night you can spend in Mawllynong touted as the cleanest village in Asia. The place would be absolutely beautiful in October due to the blooming flowers during that season.

From my personal experience I can tell you that it takes about 3.5 to 4 hros. to Travel to Shillong by road from Guwahati. I personally would prefer to start the next morning.

At Shillong you may try the hotels around the police Bazar or the Pollo Towers Hotel, a little away from the police Bazar.

Other places for sight seeing would be Cherapunjee and Dawki for which you need two days.
Even for local sight seeing within shillong walking may not be enough and you may need a vehicle.

You may also check the website of a resort at Cherapunjee, staying overnight there would be a good experience:

http://www.cherrapunjee.com/index.php

However, as the place is booked much in advance you may get in touch with them by early August.

Thanks for the reply!

Few more queries:
@Shahronakm - Ri Kynjai is above budget but the resort looks awesome... but one genuine reason not to stay there - since its around 30 mins away from Shillong city, traveling back and forth would be quite cumbersome. I am not sure about the commutation charges! Any help!

I queried Pinewood and Polo Towers - Pinewood has no deluxe rooms in October and Polo Towers , i am not sure about the review as user reviews about this hotel is really north-south in terms of user feedback.

I want to see the Living root bridges, so staying at cherrapunjee might be a good option. and another day i can make a trip to Mawllynong - Is this possible?

If you can't afford the Ri Kynjai but you are on a fairly generous budget, or rather I should say a generous budget, you might try the Tripura Castle. It has the benefit of being slightly out of the centre, meaning it is extremely peaceful. Tagore used to stay they there regularly. It has preserved his writing desk and other mementoes of his presence there. (Exciting if you are a fan of Tagore.) I have reviewed this hotel in the Hotel Section of IndiaMike.

For the Living Root Bridges, you do really need to stay in Cherra. It is very much worthwhile. I wouldn't have missed it for the world. Forget all the other sightseeing around there and just go for it. You would not regret it.

Well, I also considered staying there but we opted finally for the Tripura, for much the same reasons.

Bear in mind that Shillong traffic is a day-long gridlock (worse by far than Kolkata!!) so even getting to the centre from Cleve Colony takes an hour.

I will be reaching Guwahati on 19th Oct, evening. Can you tell me how long it takes if I go to Cherra Resort directly from Guwahati?
In that case i can first go to Cherra and then come back to Shillong.

It takes about five hours if I remember correctly. Our flight from Kolkata landed at 10:40 in the morning (Paramount) and we drove straight to Cherrapunjee, hardly stopping at all on the way, arriving at around 4 p.m.

I'm not sure it is a good plan to drive at night.

Edit:
I second the suggestion put by piran_e to visit the Don Bosco Museum in Shillong. It is brilliant.

I have left alone the idea to travel on 19th evening. Will go to Shillong / Cherra on 20th morning only.

Bit modified itinerary -

1. 19/ Reach Guwahati - stay overnight
2. 20/ Travel to Cherra ( provided they have accomodation on 20th - stay overnight)
3. 21/ Travel to Shillong in the afternoon
4. 22/ Shillong
5. 23/ Kolkata

OR

1. 19/ Reach Guwahati - stay overnight
2. 20/ Reach Shillong
3. 21/ Travel to Cherra in the morning
4. 22/ Travel to Mawlinong
5. 23/ Kolkata

Now please suggest how to utilize the time in best possible way!
BTW, the whole idea was to relax and roam

This new itinerary does not leave you enough time to trek to the Living Root Bridges. You really need a full day for it. It seems a shame to visit these places so quickly. Can't you squeeze a day or two more for this tour?

I am just back from my seventh trip to the area...It takes over three hours to Shillong and then another nearly two hours to Cherapunjee...this is an average estimate and may be stretched due to other reasons like road blockage due to trees falling from the hill side and such things.

In my opinion it is not safe to travel all the way to Cherapunjee from Guwahati in the evening.

However, if you are using the pick-up facility provided by the Resort, their advice would be the best to follow.
