Hi all, after skipping North East in favor of Bhutan, I always wanted to head back to this part of the country. Finally took the plunge and booked the tickets. After going through the threads here and consulting the good ol Lonely Planet, here is a tenative itinerary. The primary objective is photography (which is why I want to be at Hornbill festival) Feel free to suggest changes.

1-Dec-2012, Arrive at Guwahati 14:00. Head to Kaziranga
2-Dec-2012, Stay overnight at Kaziranga
3-Dec-2012, Reach back at Guwahati. Head to Kohima
4-Dec-2012,Hornbill Festival, stay overnight
5-Dec-2012, Hornbill festival, head to guwahati.
6-Dec-2012, Off to shillong. Stay overnight
7-Dec-2012,
8-Dec-2012,
9-Dec-2012, Attend the wedding of a friend at Guwahati
10-Dec-2012, Leave Guwahati, 18:40

As you can see, I got a couple of spare days- Currently I am thinking of either staying at Kohima for one more night or travel within Nagaland.

If you happen to be traveling in this area during the timeframe, feel free to give a shout. Would be great to catch up with fellow travelers over a cup of whatever beverage is locally available.

Hi Trax,

If your a shutterbug enthisiast, then you cannot miss out Sohra (Cherrapunjee), if you have already made it up to Shillong. You can also try Mawphlang, Mawlynnong, Dawki, Amlarem, Thadlaskein, Umiam etc.

Regards,

Hey, thanks Karikor. Somehow I missed your post. I did go to Shillong. But apparently December was not the best time to visit it

This was my itinerary
Day 1:
Reach Guwahati by evening. Headed to Shillong (Original plan was to go to Kaziranga, but the bus connectivity in the evening was a bit icky)
Day 2:
Hitch-hiked to Cherrapunjee. As mentioned above, was rather meh. Reached back at Shillong and roamed around.
Day 3:
Back at Guwahati to get ILP for Nagaland. Hooked up with a stranger who also had plans of Hornbill. Traveled in an extremely crowded unreserved compartment from Guwahati to Dimapur. Hired a cab from Dimapur to Zakhama where I was staying.
Day 4-6:
Chilling out at the Hornbill Festival, enjoying the rice beer, the colorful performances and the amazing food.
Day 7:
A trek to Zhuko valley at 3 AM. What was promised to be a 6 hour trek turned out to be a tweleve hour trek .
Day 8:
Took a 2 AM train from Dimapur to Guwahati. Took a bus to Kaziranga (This was actually a big mistake, it was supposedly much easier to go from Dimapur to Kaziranga). Reached just in time for the 3 PM cutoff for Jeep Safari. Saw some Rhinos fairly upclose.Could not book an elephant safari, thanks to the (&(*%* policies, could not.
Day 9:
Back to Guwahati. Got invited to lunch by our fellow passengers in the shared taxi . Attended the wedding of a friend.
Day 10:
Flight back to Mumbai. Like most flights during winter, mine was also delayed a bit.
