Hi guys,

A friend had once told me that on a full moon day one can spot bio-luminescent algae in Gokarna (to be specific, Half moon beach).

How true is this, has anybody seen it, if yes can you please share pictures?

I looked up online and did not find any dope on this.

Phosphorescence in water is real and not rare. I can't say for certain that it has nothing to do with the phases of the moon (although I doubt it) but I'm pretty sure that these organisms do not have calendars. In practical terms, I'd look for it around the new moon, as the night will be darker then!

No idea about specific places or beaches. I could tell you about it in the English channel, when the boat's wake glows --- and I remember a dingy trip back from the pub, on the River Fowey, which was filled with Eees and Ahhhs! as we watched the water dripping from the oars light up like sparks from a fire.

Very beautiful.

I have seen it on a number of occasions along the western coast, around Tarkarli, Ratnagiri, Ganpatipule, Dapoli, Harnai, Anjarle, etc. It is a common phenomenon & very visible on some nights. Nothing to do with the moonlight. I am a keen angler & we get to see this during night fishing. Sorry no picture. Tried with my normal camera with night setting but failed. Reason, the wave motion keeps the surface in motion & as a result you get ablurred image.
