Bhitarkanika is famous for crocodile breeding and it has been believed you can witness many crocodiles there. I been to this place in the month of march(bad time to go for wild life tourism) , unfortunately , it was sheer wastage of time. by the time i got to know i was already there.

I started my journey from bhubaneswar in the afternoon took the cab from OTDC. reached chandbali and stayed a night in yatri nivas. Next day early morning took the boat (all boats are private they will charge 1800/- for a boat irrespective of number of people, arrangements will be done by OTDC guys.) it will take 1:45 mins to reach dangamal , place from where you can witness crodolies lyings across the banks of river. (that is wht they say but i did not see single croco).. but crossing mangrove forest in the midst of muddy river was something like watching ANAconda movie. Awesome forest .

Boat wil take you to spt from where you have to walk for 3 kms to check out the place where Usually migratory birds come. I saw many spotted dears. but no birds.

After tiring trekking we went to croc breeding centre. where you can see many crocdiles. fortunately i took hold of baby croco with the assistance of zoo keeper. and this was all i saw in bhitarkanika . some of the lessons learnt for wildlife tourism are :
1) Best time to visist any wildlife tourism is decmber and January.
2) If you want to see croco , try to reach dangamal directly . as reaching chandabali and taking boat will kill your early mroning time.
3) Reach dangamal early in the morning , by 6:00 am . This can be reached by road i think. you can take private cab from bhubananeswar. do not rely on OTDC.
Hope this will help you in some regard.

Although i started blgging with this article but seems this one is better forum to reach many people.

This does not apply to all the Wildlife tourism. For eg. Best time to see a tiger is during summer months. I do not know about Bhitarkanika as I have never been there.

Trip to Bhitarkanika

Being from Kendrapara and not been in Bhitarkanika was kind of weird.... I always wanted to see this place for long time now. And at last i did it.. In one word "Awesome"

I hired a Taxi from Kendrapara town which is apprx 60 KM from the entry point to Bhitarkanika NP. Started off at 8 AM and reached 'Khola' by 9.30 AM. Cost- Rs 700 for taxi. We chose khola over 'Gupti' another entry point was because 1. Boats are plenty here, 2. Road to Dangamal starts from this place, in case you dont get boat!

I hired a private boat for Rs 1500. Entry fees was approx Rs 30 per head. We reached Dangamal NP after one hour of boat journey through river. And we saw many...many crocodiles! Some as big as 15+ foot!!!!

In dangamal, there is a guesthouse although state run, canteen. Famous 'Gori' is kept here. The white crocodile!

From Dangamal, i went to a place called 'Baga Gahan', which is again one hour by boat. A place where you can see Migratory birds flocking in huge numbers! Its a site... What a site! I was able to capture some rare kingfisher on my cam as well!

Then while returning, we had lunch in the boat, never forget to carry plenty of drinking water... We went to a place where the local king went for hunting and had bulit a temple. I was able to spot some dears.

Agin while coming back i spotted numerous crocodiles...In all shapes and sizes... The feeling of watching them rest was awesome. Floating in river on a boat was something like Anaconda movie!!!
I have even got the cell no of Boat-man, as i plan to return to this place in Oct-Nov and be here for two days and take a trip to a place called 'Ekakula'; where Olive-ridley turtles come in numbers. Ekakula is 4 hours from Dangamal by boat. Also night stay Dangamal Guest House enable you to experience the thrill of night at Dangamal, where all kinds of animal congregate at one place when noone is around!

I suggest visitors to book boat in advance. Go to Dangamal by boat not road, Vist in Dec-Jan & that too in morning hours so as to get to see crocodiles. Oct-Nov is a good time to see migratory birds and olive ridleys.

If watching crocodile shows on NatGeo or Discovery was great, watching them live in Bhitarkanika was magnificent..

NB:Attached one pic of fees and crocodile..

Hi Patnayak

Did you do the trip in Bhitarkanika that you have mentioned ? I need the information regarding the same.

Can anyone tell me the possibility of getting the Forest Rest Houses in Dangamal and Habalikhoti. I spoke to the Rajnagar DFO office today and they asked for a Faxed Application and the confirmation shall be given only before a month !! Not sure on the fact that whether I should rely on this and book my tickets.

Also can anyone let me know the travel time from Habalikhoti to Chandbali as well as Dangmal to Chandbali by Boat ??

Look forward to your help
