Hello!

I plan to be at the Hornbill Festival this December. I will be travelling alone and was wondering if any IMers plan to go this year. I am curious to know what your iteneraries are, and what other places you plan to visit during the trip.

I am a 33 year old Indian male travelling from Chennai, and plan to fly into Guwahati on Nov 29th and fly back on Dec 7th.
I intend to take a train to Dimapur, and then a share taxi/bus to Kohima. I will spend 3-4 days at Kohima and would like to explore neighbouring areas over the next 2-3 days.

Cheers,
Nebulous

Hi,

I am planning to attend the festival as well. Although I will only be going on the 4th till the 7th because of some work on the 2nd. Am travelling from Guwahati as am based here for now. I m also travelling solo and was wondering about travel timings. Am also in the mood to take my Enfield along.

I read that your flying back on 7th so you wont be there for the closing ceremony?

Hi Sujay,

Good to know another IMer will be there! Is this your first time to the festival?
I heard the opening ceremony is a great experience, and I dont have enough time to attend both. Which would you recommend?

Am lookin at a resort near the venue.. but i heard Kohima has an awesome night bazaar which is like a mini carnival. So kinda confused.

Sujay, Can you please share the resort details? I have been trying to contact the festival organizers to inquire about Homestays but not getting any response. I prefer staying near the festival and visiting Kohima on a night or two.
Do you know about any homestays there? I cant find any good info online.

Hallo! Strangely enough, I am only landing there on the 6th, so I suppose I will miss most of the festival. The hornbill website said that the festival has now been stretched to a 10-day affair, though. Does anyone know if this is true?

and I haven't been able to figure out any accommodation yet either!

There is also the Pakke Hornbill Festival 16-19 January 2015 in Arunachal Pradesh, close to the Assam border.

I will be there within my trip to Assam and understand that this is a much smaller version, but more local and authentic compared to Nagaland.

This might be an alternative. Has anyone been at the Pakke Hornbill Festival?

Earlier the Hornbill Festival was from 1-7th Dec. In 2013 because Nagaland was celebrating 50th Anniversary of statehood, the festival was extended to 10 days. Now because of popularity, it is a 10 day festival.

Please book your hotel rooms as early as possible, there are limited hotels and most of them are booked by agents.

You should definitely plan your trip which will cover the grand final of the rock festival, which is not to be missed.

I'm coming to the festival and traveling with a couple of Assamese friends. I'm flying in from PNQ on Dec to 5th. Will be in DIB by 11:00 AM. Then driving up to Tinsukia for a meeting and plan to take a 8:35 PM train from either Tinsukia or Dibrugarh to Dimapur. This is the only leg we are confused about since we're not sure if we should drive to Kohima straight in the evening. Would we get a cab? How much would it cost? The 8:35 PM train reaches Dimapur around 2:30 AM and we won't get a cab to Kohima that early. What's the best way to do this?

I'm driving down on 9th from Dimapur to Guwahati for onboard journey.

Any suggestions on how to do the 1st leg would be much appreciated.

Haven't booked accommodation yet but that's been taken care off. The travel is my only concern.

Just got an update that all people entering Nagaland require an inland permit for this.

Anyone has any details?

Thumbs up

Hi Nebulous,

I am a Singaporean working in Chennai, I travelled quite extensively in India over the years of my working in India. However, I guess I discover this event a little too late to plan for the trip considering the time needed for permit application. If I cannot make it this year, may try next year.... Enjoy your trip...
