We have both been to India 2 years running prior to this year and are planning to spend the whole of December over there again this year but this time we are taking our 19 yr old son and his girlfriend with us. The question that has probably been asked a million times since the 11th September is...........is it safe for Brits to travel around India. Really need to know as soon as poss as I'm about to pay for all our air tickets !!!!
Thanks

What's safe in life??

Just back from the German Embassy in Delhi - German National Day - with security checks what never had been there for the last 10 years..., you get an invitation (as well known member of the community...) and now you have to allow that a lady almost unpackes your handbag!
The 11th of September 2001 was a terrible day - but life goes on -otherwise mankind would not have reached the (official) 21st century. Buy the tickets, get here - and have a nice holiday! 20000000 inhabitants of Mumbai did not leave to some other parts of the world.

go! but play it safe.

I am leaving for India in November myself. My parents, family and friends are all somewhat worried that I have not changed my plans and yet somehow, I find it hard to believe that traveling around India could possibly be any less safe than living in any major city anywhere in the United States right now.

My plans haven't changed, I plan to go, be aware, play it safe, and keep my pickle in my pocket per usual. Worst case scenario, at the first sign of trouble you can always fly home on a whim.

Question

I'm going to India for the first time myself on business. What with the events in Afghanistan and all, I'm wondering if anyone could tell me what the attitude toward Americans is like now? I leave the USA on 10/18.

Attitude against Americans

I do not think that you will have any problem. Colin Powell is coming to Delhi (today or tomorrow), the papers are showing more European protests against war and our own daily death toll of victims of traffic, murders, Kashmir shifted now to the inner pages of the papers...
Muslims and Hindus in India are in general living together without problems. Only if politicians need trouble in order to activate their vote banks the riots are there. But in the moment they cannot afford it and they know this!
