Can anyone suggest a hotel/hotels to stay in Bombay? Looking at staying 2 nights - single room. Budget about $50.00 AUS.

Thanks

Harbour View Hotel, Colaba

Would definitely recommend Colaba as the best area to stay as there are goods shops and cafes and you are right by the Gate of India where you can catch a ferry to Elephanta Island.

Harbour View is next door to Shelleys and above another hotel called The Strand I think. Take the lift to the 3rd floor.

My wife and I were there last weekend and the rooms are clean and the staff helpful (they let us leave our bags there while we waited for a night flight). There is a superb view of the harbour from the rooftop restaurant where you can get a nice meal or just beer (breakfast up there is too bright and hot in the sun but it was lovely in the evening).

The tariff was 1800 Rs which is very expensive by most Indian standards and a little over 50 dollars AUS but for two nights you may be able to negotiate.

I get the impression Mumbai is really quite expensive so it's up to you. By the way there are loads of touts in Colaba who follow anyone with a rucksac or bags around to claim a commission for introducing you at a hotel so just do what we did and tell them you have booking or that you are meeting friends, and failing that, tell them if they don't go away you will get the Police.

They are just a damn nuisance and serve no purpose other than to further inflate the price of accommodation in Mumbai.

Enjoy Mumbai and don't forget to visit the excellent Cafe Leopold on Colaba Causeway.

a nice suite in Bandra

Though it would be better if you could find a hotel near Gateway of India and get a nice view, I would recommend Baba International which has very nice rooms, courteous staff and nice food in 2 restaurants.

Its located in Bandra Linking Road, Khar Mumbai 400052
The tariff is around 1200-1500 per night

I stayed at the Apollo guest house in Mumbai, it was good (no bugs), small private room with fan for 360 Rupees (about $12 Cdn - maybe $17 AUS). Not too cheap but probably cheaper than you are looking for. It was not bad and people were very friendly, it was right on the Colaba Causeway. Just a quick stopover for me. You can spend the rest on food and drink. Try some yummy bhelpuri.

FYI, for the rest of the people reading this I met a few people who stayed at the Salvation Army for 120 Rupees a night, lotso bed bugs and it sounded grotty but when you're ultra-cheap, you can't beat it. hehe
