Hi,

Coming from the UK where we have family doctors (General Practice GP) I am finding the Indian system a little hard to navigate.

I know it is mostly private, but do people have family doctors in India that monitor health longer term and do house visits or is is always on a case by case basis at the big hospitals?

Any recommendation for a foreigner for a family doctor in south mumbai? Or maybe the nearest thing in a private health facility?

Really appreciate it thanks!

There are many GP's (family doctors) running clinics in South Mumbai. Where are you put up?

Hi, thanks for replying. I'm near Marine Lines/Marine Drive. I have seen specialist practices around and 'doctors' who seem quite quackish, but thats about it! Can you recommend any good ones?

I don't think you will get what you are looking for. In India the doctor will not keep a record of your previous visits (dentists might).

So (in my opinion) the duty of care here is not as great.
Lord, Grant me the Serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to hide the bodies of those people I had to kill because they pissed me off.

GP type Doctors in South Mumbai

My experience is the same. However, it is still possible to keep your own file, and get to be known by your doctor. You can have a family doctor relationship.

Might be tough to find a Doc who keeps record of your family. But you can choose one good GP and maintain a regular visit. That way he/she would be aware of your history and can treat you accordingly.

I stay in Thane and have chosen a doc likewise. The problem I see here is many tend to visit large hospitals which does not treat patients but more look at them like money cows.
Normal Ailments like fever, cough, rashes .. I visit my GP first.
Anything which require admission or specialist care(Fracture.. etc), I try and chose a hospital which is proved reasonable and not just operate a money milking mechanism. (I have my goto places and no go lists in thane)

So Keep a doc through personal reference for your GP visits.
And a nursing home, for anything that requires more.

Hope you find what you are looking for.

Regards

Thanks for the replies everyone. I think I will do as advised: find a doc to visit regularly even if just for checkups (as a retainer so to speak and stay familiar). Separately I will make a list of bigger hospitals in the area.

Does anyone have any recommendations for either doctors or larger facilities in South Mumbai - cannot beat decent recommendations!

Are you moving for a longer stay ? Do you suffer from major in-patient type care ? The reason I ask is, you have to weigh options.

If I were anticipating one, I would first find the hospital in the vicinity that you feel comfortable with - Then, go look for a doctor that has visiting privs in that hospital. This ensures continuity in critical care.
