What!? So a single room is going to cost about $650US/month! Doesn't that seem a bit steep?

You think you should be able to get a room for 25 to 40 rupees a day? doesn't seem ridiculously cheap?

Including food?

When I was in Dharamsala a couple of years back, I was quoted much the same prices for rooms in one of the monasteries out of town.

This is one of the ways in which the monks are able to provide an income to pay for their food; electricity; oil/ghee (for lamps); etc.

India can be cheap but don't expect it to be almost free.

Cheers

Well considering my 2 year course will cost Rs.1775, yes, I think Rs.900 per day is too much.

It is likely that at that price, the education is subsidised.

A reasonably decent private High School in a large city can well cost about that much, per month- or more.

I can see the point that a student at an organisation might expect preferential rates from that organisation.

In this city, 800-1200 would get you a decent AC room in a clean guest house or hotel, 250 would get you a tiny, non-ac, but adequate room somwhere like Broadlands Guesthouse, which is a famous low-budget backpacker's organisation.

You say your 2 yr course will cost 1775. What, for two years? or is that per month? Confusions abound here!

I think that's the price for the whole two years. I guess you guys are right, the course fees could be cheaper while the housing is more. I was just surprised the housing would be so much. Thought it would be a bit less. I wouldn't even pay $650 per month in the US

Then it looks like the fees are purely nominal; that is a tiny amount of money.

The accomodation thing certainly mounts up, though, if you are doing it long-term

They are already providing you with a extremely subsidised course fee. Why should they also provide you subsidised accomodation?
That accomodation is not a hostel... its more like a guesthouse. Its better to stay as a paying guest. you will get plenty of PG accomodations in south kolkata. One room with attached bathroom will cost from 3000 to 8000 depending on location.

Thanks for the suggestion. Maybe I will check out options for being a paying guest.
