Hi,

I have been offered a senior position in a multi-national to move to New Delhi which we are considering.

We have an offer on the table which we cannot decide if it is good enough for us to take the plunge, and I am hoping we can get some views or opinions here.

Our Background: We are a family of four. The kids will be 5 yo and 3 yo when we "should" move to Delhi. We are wondering about the living situation in Delhi.
We originally from London (England), however we have been living in Shanghai (China) for the last 3 years. We are already having a good living standard in China, and we have been thrown an opportunity to experience India, and we are in the "consideration" mode.

- We have been recommended two school, but the one are thinking about is the British International School. Does anyone have any views on this school? Is there any other international schools that follow the British Curriculum in Delhi?

- I will work in Cyber city ?? Gurgaon. Whats is the best place to live (based on the kids commute and my commute? We will have a car and driver, and School bus is paid for if we need it.

- What are the "high end" prices on housing like? We are looking for a 4-5 bedroom apartment or villa, and prefer a "western" standard.

- What is the best area to live in within Delhi considering the work and school locations above?

- My wife is a Western Doctor in Shanghai, what is the requirements on foreign doctors working in Shanghai?

- We will plan to have "full time" help around the house. What is the going rate for a nanny/maid? What is the expected hours they should work?
Is there any trustworthy agencies we can find good nannies and housemaids?

- My company will provide a driver with our car, however as we are not allowed to drive in India, what is the usual working hours of the driver and the overtime costs? Should I expect to "pay" overtime on weekends?

- How is it generally to live in Delhi (I.e Safety and security)?

- What are your general utilities bills like? We are looking at apartments around the 4,000sq ft to 5,000sq ft mark.

- what is the general cost of living like (being an expat)?

I hope someone can help, as this decision making process os driving us crazy.

A 4500 SFT, with parking space, and power backup in a gated DLF I area, would be anywhere between 90K-1.2L INR/month. There are a few new properties in walking distance of Cyber City/Cyber Hub area which could be slightly less.

Did you mean to type "...working in Delhi/India?"

I seem to remember that there is some sort of rule or regulation which means that a foreign citizen cannot practice medicine here. I know it has been discussed.

Many threads on this forum with similar questions. Do search.

The British International School- Gurgaon commute will be a biggish issue. I would consider living in South Delhi- Vasant Vihar- Chanakyapuri belt- if budget permitted. This would mean that a) the people commuting long distance would be adults, not kids b) Better after office activities would be closer c) I would have to ensure, since gated communities do not exist in these areas, that I had 100% power backup for everything including airconditioning and d) Two cars may be required.

Read this thread, particularly dillichaat's comments- he will have a 'higher end' expat's perspective.
