We are Canadians (East African Indian origin) moving to New Delhi in December 2012. We have been living in South Africa since 9 years but have never lived in Asia.

We have two children who will be attending international schools. Wanted to know if there are other expat families on this forum to share their views of life in Delhi. Is quality of life good? Are the international schools e.g American Int. school good and the children come out well mannered and good education? Is it easy to make friends? I will not be working initially, so what would Ido when kids are in school and hubby at work to keep my sanity intact? Is house help easy to find and reliable? Are there good gyms which women can go to, during the day?

I'm so nervous about moving to Delhi and don't know what to expect. We are in our early 30's. Children are 11 and 7. Any kind of feedback will be highly appreciated.

I wouldnt worry too much, everything is available in Delhi (NCR) but its a huge area and alot depends on where exactly you plan on living. I lived there for 18mth in 2006-7, didnt have any kids so can't comment too much on the schools although l knew plenty of middle class parents with kids and their kids were very well mannered and highly educated (more so than the UK at least). In terms of areas, your best of in South Delhi, Greater Kailash 2 is were l lived and l couldnt recommend it highly enough.

Smile There's plenty to do

You are moving to Delhi at a very good time..the weather is lovely. The British School and the American Embassy School are good schools..I forget why but I think the British one is better then the American one

You can find plenty to do in your spare time.....your embassy will advise on what's out there......my suggestion would be join the Delhi Network...it's an international club that meets at the Hyatt.....go to their own office at the Hyatt, they have a registry for servants....And they can fill you in on all the various activities that you could be involved in.

Once you have submitted 10 messages on India Mike I can Private e-mail you
More info.

So sorry

I am sorry if I offended using that term....have been away from India for a year.
Did not realize that another term has replaced servant. please accept my sincere apology.

Thank you all for feedback. My husband and I are planning a trip second week of October to finalize housing and schools. We have been advised by the relocation company to apply at both schools because of the waiting lists, however having Canadian citizenship our chances of getting into the American school are a bit higher than British. Areas we have been advised to live in are Malcha Marg, Shanti Niketan, Vasant Vihar because they are closer to the schools and children spend less time in traffic commuting to school. Are these good suburbs to live in?

Thank you Robin and Jaz, your advise means a lot. As much as weare excited about the move we are anxious too about moving to a new continent
