Is it difficult to just turn up and rent somewhere short-term? I'm a photographer who is looking to base himself self in Delhi for a while. I'd be on a tourist visa and would have a fairly tight budget, maybe 25,000 to 35,000 per month inc bills. Is my plan reasonable?

I am sure others with more uptodate knowledge will chime in. Elaborate your standard of living, amenities that you wish to have for better answers.

You will get much better answers if your post is a bit more detailed and clear. Let me ask with your maximum budget of 35k indian rupees per month, what does cover? Rent, food, utilities, staples, ... ?

My wild guess, it is not enough to cover all these. You may need 1k for a mid-level standard, perhaps, 2k ? India is experiencing serious bout of inflation.

I was thinking 25,000 for rent and utilities. Otherwise I get by very cheaply as I don't tend to drink, I eat street food/dhaba and am more than comfortable shopping in the market, taking the tube, local buses etc. As for the room itself my only conditions would be a room in a relatively secure place. I don't care about living in the expat area etc.

Getting something in that budget is not a problem , question is where you end up getting it and if you will be happy with the location or if the location is convenient and safe.

Try Air B&B india , they launched operations a while ago and you might find something there as well , owners list everything from shared flats to independent units - but the decent ones are probably going to be upwards of 1000 a month atleast.
