We are in the process of planning a move from Netherlands to Delhi, where we expect to spend a couple of years. I'm a bit of a gadget head and am wondering whether the get some of things that I feel the "needed" gadgets we "need" before we go or wait until arrival. Are electronic goods similar prices to Europe? Can I expect the same sorts (quality levels and features, if not the same models) of things to be available?

The falling rupee and the ever increasing duties/taxes may make them expensive than EU. Also the range of products may be not as varied.

If audio or video gadgets are part of your interest then I recommend HiFiVision.com.

Prices vary widely. Some things are more or less the same as Europe, others may be substantially more expensive. One gadget that I enquired after recently was almost double the European price, and the difference would have paid the airfare (but not accommodation) to go and by one. And that was before the recent Rupee collapse.

You can look at sites such as Flipkart for online availability of things like phones and cameras, and some hifi. Computers are widely available as are PC parts, and I think their prices are not much increased.

I tend to look to Singapore for the shopping experience --- for choice and the opportunity of limitless browsing. I have family there, anyway, so my regular visits are more than just shopping trips, but that part of the planet is much closer, quicker and cheaper to reach than Europe. It will also serve when all you want is a few days of clean streets!

Shop wisely, though. I'm thinking of buying a new camera, and initial enquiries suggest that it might be cheaper in India.

I guess real gadget freaks might go to Hong Kong! I think I'd find that overwhelming.

My experience of comparison of prices in USA, SE Asia and India -
Most entry level things cost similar.
Laptops with usual configurations, p&s cameras, entry level DSLRs cost more or less same.

The days of huge price differences and limited availability got over about 6-7 years back. I used to bring lots of computer components from abroad in the past, but nowadays I always buy locally. Everything I ever needed is available and the price increase is very rarely more than 10%.

On computer components, I think that the import duties were substantially reduced a few years ago, and the only reason to buy outside India would be available of some particular specific thing. The only part in my box that was imported is the CPU cooler: at the time, the brand I wanted was not easily available here.

Hifi is another matter altogether.
