I may be moving to Gurgaon for about 3-6 months. I'm extremely nervous and don't know what to expect. What is safety like in this city, especially pertaining to women? Any tips or advice would be greatly appreciated!

And I'll kick in post #5 here

Also consider Delhi expat group Yuni-net.

I don't know where in the US you live; so relatively, to give a comparision. Yesterday, I remarked to someone over some micro-brews; that Gurgaon is like a patch of land across the Hudson River, called Joisy . It looks and feels like suburbia on the high-rise. If you plucked Gurgaon and dropped it anywhere it looks like wasteland suburbia.

Gurgaon is safe for a certain subset of the crowd that lives there; who are - a) Enclosed high-rise gated communities. b) Need an enclosed car to go anywhere even remotely useful. c) More malls per sq mile outside of Orchard Rd, SIN. d) More brew-pubs than rest of India combined e) Nearly all services and consumer goods are delivered to your door, and can be ordered by phone.

Well Gurgaon is a safe city just that avoid going out too late in the night alone and while moving out would be better If you have friends with you.

I'm American, and have been in Gurgaon a couple of weeks now. So far, so good. Don't go out at night, as the others have said. I walk around during the day time, and no one pays me any attention except the friendly bicycle rickshaw guys who are disappointed that I don't take them up on their offer.

A friend in Jaipur gave me the advice not to take a rickshaw anywhere if two guys are in the front, because then it is two against one if they try anything. I've talked to multiple women who have said that they have had no problems with rickshaw drivers doing anything untoward.

As far as amenities are concerned, I have been able to find a lot more stuff I miss from the US in Gurgaon than I could ever find in Jaipur. That has been nice, although Jaipur has frugalized me so much that I rarely buy them because they seem insanely overpriced in Gurgaon.

Do you have any specific questions?
