Hi. My wife and I have just moved to Gurgaon. We need to hire a driver. Grateful for any recommendations and tips. Also how much should I expect to pay? Thanks.

Ask around at your place of employment for recommendations. That being said, I hear from people living there that finding good staff in Gurgaon can be a challenge. What you'll pay your driver depends on what you expect of him, generally it'll be a base salary of about 10000 Rs/month but this will only include an 8-hour 'shift'/day, 6 days/week, which will of course not suffice as it's calculated from the time his duties start. They will expect extra pay for overtime and for nightshifts. I don't know the rates for those but negotiate hard because those charges tend to accrue fast.

Make a very clear arrangement about this (including a definition of when 'night' starts) and have him agree explicitly to your conditions, don't take an 'ok' or 'no problem' as acquiescence because it's not and you will run into trouble sooner or later. Also make arrangements for holidays (best to just tell him he goes on leave when you go on leave and any other absence for whatever reason will result in not getting paid for those days).

Most important of all: say very clearly that he is to consume absolutely NO alcohol when on duty as this will result in instant dismissal.

All of what DilliChat says holds good.

I have, however managed to get a good driver who is polite, punctual and drives the way I want him to (No honking, no cutting lanes or jumping red lights, driving IN a lane...I could go on)

I pay him 10,000 rupees.
He starts at 8 and ends when I do. (If I am really late, say after 9, I give him a couple of hundred rupees)
6 days a week. No overtime

Holidays- He does ask for a few days off every couple of months. My understanding with him is very clear, if he is not back on the day he says he will be, he need not come back. It has had a salutory effect. I travel fairly often, so he has far more paid days off than most people. All in all, he has a good deal, and knows it.
