Hi all,

I will be in Delhi from the middle of July until the middle of September and would love some advice on commuting around Delhi and what a reasonable distance is to be from work concerning the infamous Delhi traffic.

The majority of my work will take place near Noida City Centre, however I have been thinking about living on the other side of the river in the Defence Colony area. How will this commute be each day? I won't be driving and will be taking a taxi each way. Also, what are some other good neighborhoods commute friendly to Noida that are good for a mid-20's male?

Thanks!
Chris

Here is the iink to Blue Line - Most of the metro stops on this line, in New Delhi are residential neighborhoods sans the tourist traps near CP

I live in Defence Colony, and commute on the metro every day. I work in Noida on and off.

I can tell you that the metro journey on the Blue Line to Noida in the mornings is utterly hellish ... the most crowded metro journey I've taken in my life, with not a single gap between passengers.

Instead I now get a lift from a colleague when I need to go to Noida, which is actually much quicker anyway. We go over the Delhi-Noida Direct Flyway (DND), which has a bridge over the Yamuna river. We usually go around 8am and the traffic is usually fine, plus the DND has 8 lanes anyway.

If you really want to use the metro from Def Col you have to go to Lajpat Nagar station (15 mins walk, or 5 mins in a rickshaw), which is on the Violet line. Then go up to Central Secretariat to change onto the Yellow Line, and then up to Rajiv Chowk to get on the Blue Line.

[ There are several variants of metro map btw. I find this one the most useful: http://www.delhitravel.org/wp-conten...o-Map-2012.jpg ]

Central Secretariat is no fun either... since the line terminates there, the platform is usually completely full of people waiting to get on, and of course everyone on the train has to get off. Sometimes you literally have to fight people to be able to get off, since they all try to push inside to get a seat, regardless of the numerous security guards blowing whistles and trying to let everyone off.

Similarly, Rajiv Chowk is a major interchange and gets extremely busy.

The way to avoid this unpleasantness is to travel very early... before 7am it's actually fine, and before 8am it's not too bad. But it's still quite a trek from Lajpat Nagar to Noida City Centre via metro, compared to car/taxi.

If you're only going to be in Delhi for 2 months, a bigger challenge might be finding accommodation... you will almost certainly have to be in a hotel, which limits your choice of neighbourhoods anyway.

Hope this helps!

Erm.... I just noticed the OP didn't mention the metro at all. Oh well, so much for my diatribe!
