We're moving to Chennai for my husband's work. He's helping to start a new office so there's flexibility about where we'll live--hoping office school and house will be reasonably close together. We're looking at Adyar after reading through posts on India Mike as well as talking to some folks that live in Chennai. And yet of course, we're still looking for advice:

We've got three girls (10, 6 and 5) and would like to find them a school in Adyar which would be good for three (slightly sheltered) girls from Canada. We can't afford the rates at the American School and I'm not sure about the tuition at other schools which mostly cater to foreigners. Any advice more than welcome.

If you know of a school you think might be good, my husband's visiting Chennai next week and will try and check some out.

One other thing, it may be we're only there for 6-8 months. Do you think schools would be willing to accept students for just part of the year?

Many thanks,
Kim (and Daniel)

Adyar Schools

Hi,
Adyar is a big area and has smaller areas such as Gandhi nagar, Shastri nagar, Indira nagar etc
Here are some decent schools you may want to look at

Schools in Gandhinagar,Adyar, St Michaels Academy, Vidya mandir, St.Patricks, all near by
Schools near Gandhinagar- Sishya

Outside Adyar Area- Beasent Nagar - St Johns
R.A puram - Chettinad vidya ashram
All the above schools have expats children from time to time, If you want one in the lines of American School, there is a school called Vaels billabong in Neelangarai 40 mins drive from Adyar Regds / Anand

Thank you for your help. This is great. It looks like Vidya Mandir might be upper secondary--so not appropriate for kids age 5-10, correct? I've begun looking at the others and they all look promising though perhaps difficult to get in to for a short period of time--do you think the fact we're planning only to be around 6-8 months will make it difficult to find a school?
thanks,
Kim

There is a board which limits the no of students in a class appearing a board exam which is in 10th standard, just have to explain to the school that your kids will stay on from kindergarden to std 5 and are no way staying long enough to appear for the board and the school might oblige if they can accomadate an extra seat, its admission time right now you could pick up an application. My choice for schools if your being in Adyar 1) Sishya 2) St.Michaels Academy.
Anand
