hey there,

I'll move to chennai and get adviced to live in perungudi or thoraipakkam. What are the advantage/disadvantage of both areas?
Are they safe and healthy?
Are there some nice restaurants, bars or shopping facilities?

Thank you very much for your help!

I live close to Perungudi. I would not describe it as healthy, as there is a lot of pollution from small industry, etc.

Depending on budget, you could live on the sea side of East Coast Road, or Besant Nagar, Adyar, etc. If your budget is high, there are posh sea-side houses.

now that the resident chennai expert has spoken, i have little to add except you may consider Thiruvanmiyur , it's on the seaside and not terribly congested. The neck that takes you to Perungudi though does get congested ... but its better than not being close to the sea ...

All but a very few, very very posh areas of Chennai are mixed.

Perangudi/Kandanchavadi/Palavakkam-[West of ECR] is a mixture of new developments, small to mid size, and maybe a little large too, industry. Oh, there is a dump yard here somewhere, but I haven't found it yet. It is perfectly possibly that you might find a nice house in a pleasant corner. The trouble is that the infrastructure has no-where-near kept pace with the development.

Another place to look at is Velachery. This has some very pleasant districts, although it also has some road connectivity problems, and some streets which are very prone to monsoon flooding. Ask the neighbours before moving in.

It is sunny and dry here for 90% of the year. The water falls out of the sky all at once. Flooding is inevitable, and even in the poshest street in the poshest suburb they may be something nasty mixed in with that street-full of water outside your street. That's life here!

(Thiruvanmiyur: yes, that's another good idea)

There is not much difference between Perungudi and thoraipakkam apart from the toll crossing. The toll makes perugudi a bit costlier than places after the toll.
The the interior roads in both places are in bad condition. So, if you find a place closer to the OMR its better. You would not find many departmental stores /stores beyond the toll plaza (as of now).

Safety is not a big concern unless you are living in the interiors, Kannagi nagar should be avoided.
