Hi everyone. I am looking for some advice re a potential move to Chennai in the next couple of months.

1. The office location is in Alwarpet. Please can someone guide me as to the best place to live. Ideally we would want a villa (budget 75k to 1.5 lakh)Obviously I do not want to commute for hours but am relatively flexible. Also it would be useful if you could guide us as to reputable, honest real estate agents.

2. We have a 4 year old daughter, please can you guide me as to the best international schools in Chennai.

3. We would want to keep up our fitness regime and would like to join a gym/club with good facilities. Please can you advise.

4. We have a dog that is part of our family and would be bringing her with us. Please can someone guide us as to the process to do this or alternatively let us know who to contact to get this kind of information.

5. I am a social yet regular cyclist, are there groups who cycle regularly on the weekends and could you let me have details.

Many thanks for all your help and I certainly hope to be enjoying the Chennai life soon.

Well I cannot answer a lot of your questions as I don't live fulltime in Chennai for over two decades now except visits but as for the area you are wanting to rent, stick to the Alwarpet area if that is where you'll be working. It is one of the nicest areas of Madras and close to everything and your rental budget might score you a nice 3 or 4 bdrm flat furnished/unfurnished with money to spare. Alwarpet as such is a huge general area with sub areas inside it(Poes garden, CIT colony, Venus colony, Abiramapuram, Gopalapuram, Teynampet etc) and most of them are nice and close to all crème de la crème of Madras shopping and dining. So keep that as your top choice. Other areas I can recommend which are not too far off are Adyar/Besant Nagar/Kalakshetra Colony or RA Puram/MRC nagar or Nungambakkam which all are not too far off and the nicest areas in town and I believe you can score a nice flat in all those areas in that rental budget.

I think there is an American Int'l school in the Thiruvanmiyur/Besant Nagar area and a British school as well, depending on which one you are leaning towards.

Sorry but not of much help with the rest of your questions but someone who lives there now will shed more light on the rest.

Here is a personal tip. Try to get a flat as close to or in Poes Garden or Gopalapuram and that electricity grid and you'll be spared most of the brutal powercuts most Madras inhabitants face everyday. Of course in your budget I'd expect the apartment to have backup generator and the works.

Alwarpet.

Absolutely agree that you need to look no (or not much) further. Just take a look at Google Maps, and check out walking distance from your office. There are many corners, all with their own names, but nearby Abhiramapuram is a great place to live too.

the neighborhood where I stayed was perfect, IMO....20 min. walk to Mylapore in one direction, short walk the other way to Niligris, Spencer Market, ATMs, a good medicine shop, and places to eat....

would I live there? hell yeah...
