well then, after some serious contemplation, meditation and drinking-session later i finally decided to accept a job offer that needs me to move to chennai...and in less than a month from now too

and after an equally serious contemplation, meditation and drinking-session later i finally decided to dare to post here in the "India Expat Area" seeking guidance, assistance and whatever not from all you kind folks! after all - having already made introductions earlier - its no secret that i am nowhere nearly close to being an expat having said that, i am afraid, i do seem to feel the same sense of trepidation as one would, i imagine! i mean my encounters with chennai is limited to landing there and flying out...and that's about that!

my first order of business is to find myself accommodation, and though i am not going to do something concrete about the concrete till i am there, i want to cover as much of the groundwork i possibly can. my prospective workplace is going to be in Thiru-Vi-Ka Industrial Estate in Guindy, though I might also be working out of their DLF IT Park (Nandambakkam?) facilities (aren't they like several lightyears away from each other?).

so considering Guindy will be my base station, which would be the localities i should be looking at? Ekkathuthangal, Defence Colony, Balaji Nagar? I would like to be able to commute to my workplace in less than 20 minutes time.

okay, now i know people have asked similar questions in the past and there have not been too many positive responses - but I am hoping, against all odd, that things might have changed over time: do u get studio apartments in chennai? and, ahem, furnished ones at that; add in the A/C, geyser, washer, microwave, a functional kitchenette, fridge, water, telly...gated community...the list could go on forever and a day...ideally almost like the serviced studio types that one may find in Bangalore...

alright, now scrap all that: what could i get for say 15K (INR i meant!)?

i have more Qs lined up, but let's see how all you good people handle these to begin with (oh, for the grumpy ones likely to take offence with that, i mean no offence; i have been following IM for a long time now and i know how helpful this community is! i picked up immensely useful tips from here for my travels to other parts of the country - which is as mystical to me, as i am sure, is to a potential expat or traveler! thanks a ton folks for reading through and making india less intimidating!)

Welcome to Chennai.

I don't think that the two locations that you mention are lightyears apart in km, but they might be in traffic!

most of the other stuff, I'll leave to the working Chennai members with better knowledge. I think that furnished accommodation is relatively uncommon. I also think that 15K is not much in this city these days. Prices have shot up in a few years.

I'm sure you've already used the search IM engine and forum menu for the 'Moving to Chennai' threads, a good place to start...tons of info around & sooner or later the ones who know all about these particulalr issues should be along. Congratulations on the new position.

thanks Dani and Nick
well, i actually have been researching quite a bit of late and, of course, when you google 'moving to chennai', this forum comes up right on top; the posts are helpful indeed! but the studio/1 BHK issue always seemed to remain open and thus my confusion, you see housing, it seems, is not particularly single friendly!
i actually came across a couple of ads for decent 2 BHK properties, reasonably furnished too, in some classifieds for 25K or so and that got me thinking i could perhaps find something for that kind of money. i could stretch my budget up a little but i don't need a larger place only for myself...
anyways thanks a lot again and will stay tuned in

HI the bigbongstory
Love ur id!!
You can easily find a 1 bedroom flat in Adyar / Besant nagar barely furnished for 15k. I moved to chennai 4 years ago and have been living in this area since.
It is true that a lot of owners wont rent their apt to singles but hey.. thats where your charm comes in handy.. hehehe..
Good luck with your search..

Oh, am so glad you do like my ID []

Thanks; but I actually posted that question more than a year back and have been unsuccessfully trying to blend in here ever since. It isn't working though! The cultural and language gap is almost maddening and the heat doesn't help either! Anyways, I did find something that works for me, albeit definitely not in the fancier part of the town that you are used to!

And, did you say "charm"? []

Anyways, I haven't been around on IM since last year and found my way back searching for something altogether different when I came across your generous comment []

Cheers! (Or, do you even say that to Chennaiites (and you definitely seem to be one by having made it your home for 4 years now)?!!)

I think you can say "cheers," yes. Or ...you can just give a couple of head wobbles. Almost as good as speaking Tamil sometimes!

Hello the bigbongstory, Danmita and Nick-H,
I am in the process of making my move to Chennai and if things go well, I will be there by October 2012. Based on your recent move to Chennai can you share some of the places where you think it would be a good choice to live. I am unfamiliar with Chennai but I was born and raised in Coimbatore so I know the language.

I am looking for a 3-4 bedroom apartment, have 2 kids (age 3 and 1) and looking for a villa (or something similar).. Not interested in high-rise buildings and purely from a security stand point, prefer a gated community.

Your advice would be very helpful.

Thank you
Mitul

There are some very nice "mid-rise" apartments. If you could live on a five or six floors up, you might find a cooler breeze and a very slight drop in the number of mosquitoes.

Chennai has lots of nice suburbs, and there are still independent houses available ...or there is the option of living near the sea.

I have little or no idea about current rental costs.

Suggest you spend some time with Google Maps and your workplace address, and come up with an area/areas that others can respond to. The city is just too big to simply list a few nice places.

for the same 15k u can get 2-3 bedrooms in Vadapalani (sorry the area i know some what..). i think gated community is pretty costly but you ll get everythin near like a gated community in vadapalani area. everything is near.
