Hello everyone,

I'm new to this Forum. My family and I are moving to Chennai in August 2011.

We were just there last week to look for housing and schools. We are a French-Singaporean family who currently live in Paris.

We will most likely be living in the Neelangarai area and are looking to HIRE DOMESTIC HELP who live nearby or can travel in very easily, especially for an early start in the morning.

So if anyone has good recommendations for staff who have worked for expat families and can speak some English, please message me.

We are looking to hire:

1 full-time, live-in Nanny
1 Maid/Cook (live out)
1 Driver, full-time, live out (preferably lives quite close by and has his own scooter or motorcycle in case of emergencies (we have a toddler).
1 Caretaker/Gardener

If you know any such people looking for work and are reliable please contact me. All must have references whom I can contact.

Thanks & Merci!

Blush - Welcome to IndiaMike and Chennai. It looks like you are looking to hire quite a few people. What kind of budget do you have in mind. From experience I can tell you that hiring a good driver is almost impossible. Most drivers are not very reliable. They will not show up when you really need them and they also keep asking for advances and the next thing you know they are gone. Please be very careful when hiring any help.

Thanks for your quick reply sgtusa. Yes I completely understand about the driver bcos we had a pretty lousy driver when we were there last week! (Use a car service)

He didn't know many places and couldn't even understand basic instructions like "wait here for 15 minutes".

Yes we have an adequate budget to hire the household staff. I'm most concerned about hiring a good live-in Nanny bcos we have a toddler.
The driver has to be reliable too as there will be the usually commutes between work and school during fixed times, so he must always be punctual.

Hello blush, welcome to Indiamike

Just letting you know that commercial activity is not permitted here, and that includes classified ads. So it will not be possible for you to use this site to actually find staff.

But hopefully people will be able to advise you on how and where to look.

Hi Julia

Thanks for letting me know.

I hoping to find people on this forum who are expats in Chennai and are leaving, so can pass on info about their staff. In other forums I've been on for the countries we've moved to, usually this kind of info is shared on country forums. They are not classified ads but private communication between forum members. Which is why I asked people to message me.

Hiring domestic help in india is through word of the mouth, since that is the only method I found works the best, otherwise you have to go for independent police verification of the person you are hiring, you need to speak tamil to go police station and try to communicate with those guys is a hassle. Other options search sulekha for classfied ads there are agencies which do provide house service where you can hire maid/nanny/driver in a single place, it is safe to do so, but the cost is on the higher side.

Another bit of info - the private messaging system only becomes available to new members when they have been a member for 10 days and have made 10 posts.

Again, welcome to the site. It's a friendly place and I'm sure there will be many people with useful advice and experiences to share with you.
