Hello! We have recently moved into a sparsely furnished apartment here in Chennai. While our major furniture needs are covered (beds, wardrobes, kitchen table, couch and chairs, even a TV!) we still need to pick up a chest of drawers and some book cases. We went yesterday to the used furniture shop that Mirjamd recommended. They do have lovely things, at very reasonable prices for what they are selling, but we're in the market for cheap. Is there an Indian equivalent of Ikea? We may only be staying for 10 months and plan on leaving whatever furniture we buy in Chennai inChennai. Cheap, cheap, cheap is what we're looking for, and we understand that quality will be sacrificed.

Thanks!

The shops nearby in Royapettah where you went to the second-hand place will have budget furniture. Places like JFA should be good.

Nayan, fairly sure you mean Arcot Road.

You can buy reasonably cheap cane furniture on Spur Tank Road in Chetpet. Yes, it is ON the roadside. If you like cane, you could check it out.

Nayan, this was just the ticket. We need the furniture now, and the Sarvana shop in T Nagar was so crowded when we were there that it was quite unpleasant (I know, we should have waited until after Deepavali...). Mirjamd, if the next job pays for us to move somewhere, or we stay in India long-term, I'll definitely go back to the furniture shop you recommended on Royapettah Road. There are some real gems there at great prices for furniture you intend to keep!

Thanks for everyone's helpful suggestions, as always.

Yes, it was pretty awful, actually a little bit scary (only at the Saravana store was it frightening, Pondy Bazaar was just croweded) But I figure that when we go back aver Deepavali the crowds will seem tame in comparison! Trial by fire, I guess! And hey, I'm still (mostly) happy to be here, so it wasn't too scarring an event...

Go on a Tuesday, before lunch.

Tuesday is considered an inauspicious day to make purchases, which cuts the crowds considerably.
