I was thinking some more about this.

Blush opened this thread on 1st June. We are now 2/3rds through August, and the negotiations are still going on. Good housing is not that easy to find in Chennai, but, after ten weeks, this landlord has not rented his house out to anyone? I don't like the smell ...

Friend of mine lost his chance just in few hours - he visited a place before noon, returned ready to finalize at 4 p.m. - and got this house gone. The same happened with me at least once. Good offers don't stay more than one day...

Nick, actually the delay was on our end not the landlord's. (Specifically the HR department of my husband's company who were dragging their feet on signing the lease and getting all the paperwork done)
We met with the owner and he agreed not to show it to anyone else because we had promised to rent it.

It took so long to sign the lease because the Chennai-based relocation agency assigned to us claimed that they have a monopoly of showing housing to us and how they were upset that we did not rent a house through them but another agent. So they kinda made a fuss about it with HR.

Our point of contention was that the properties shown by the relocation agency did not meet any of our needs despite us giving feedback on the first day of viewings, and they had nothing else to show us within the viewing time frame. So we viewed more properties with another agent.

Anyway with all that settled, we will finally move in September.

I still wonder why he waited for you.
