Mansukh's at #10 Ramasamy St, T Nagar (4212-7975) has great Gujarati thali and a Rajasthani thali (special Sunday thali, too). If you are there between 4-7 you can order from the menu downstairs. Their stuffed paratha with a side of yogurt is so thick it's a meal unto itself. The pepper (black pepper) paneer is great and the malai lassi excellent. You can buy dokhla (and kandvi in the morning) to take home. (It's a steamed lentil cake--looks like cornbread).

Gujurati Mandu is up north on Broadway. Great Sunday Thali, but it's not as nice inside. 2435-1258.

The Rangoli thali (Gujurati) at Saravanna Bhavan in Mylapore was disappointing.

Shri Murthai snack place in Spencer Plaza also has dokhla, including a layered one with chutney and sliced paneer. They also have kandvi if you get there before it is sold out.

Bengali--Annapurna, at 23 Pantheon Road in Egmore. 2852-3037. The fish steamed in banana leaf was great. No sandesh or other sweets. It's a small place so you may have to wait for a table.

In Kilpauk/Vadapalani

Thali Corner has Rajasthani & Gujurati thali. Sundays are crowded, so prepare to sit on the balcony and wait. The food was good (half the dishes are Gujurati, half Rajasthani), but at 175 Rs. (since when is gulab jamun so special?), I still think Mansuk's & Sri Gujarathi Mandal (Broadway) are better.
Address:
WIndsor Palace Bldg
33/13 Balfour Rd. (branches off of Kilpauk Garden Rd.)

Mithai Mandir (Gujurati--I haven't tried it)
New 17 (old 16, Palani Andavar Koil St.
Vadapalani (Near Saravana Bavan and Muragan Temple)

Poonam's Gujarati Bhojanalaya (I haven't tried it)

I have been to Mansukh a couple of times.. its just a 5 min walk from my parents' place... Fantastic food.. Atleast back in 2005!

Only drawback with gujrati/rajasthani restaurants is you almost never get beer there.. or any other alcohol for that matter!
If only I knew then what I know now..

Mansukh's branch & Saravana Bhavan Gujarati Thali

Mansukh's has a branch (no meals, only snacks) on TTK Road almost under the flyover as you approach from the south.

SB @ Mylapore has a Guj. thali that's pretty good in the AC hall upstairs.

Bay Leaf/Gangotree

On Cathedral Road about 1/2 km west of The Music Academy, is Gangotree Snacks/Sweets. They have Bengali sweets, dohkla, etc. About 20 m behind it is the Bay Leaf, which has Bengali food--it was delish.

The Rangoli is a terrific Gujarati restaurant, nicely decorated. Great place to bring a client or guest.

Rajdani has opened at Skymall

This fantastic Gujarati resto (I ate there in Delhi on Sun.) has opened, but I don't know if it's a full-fledged rest. or just in the food court.

I hope we can have a meetup when I am next in Chennai, to try some of this divine-sounding food.

Rocky44 alert from Dave's poster coming to india

I didn't know how to find you, so...

I'm not coming to Chenai; in fact, I'm moving to Delhi in 3 days and need a contact. Pls advise...anyone, anything. (Screwy Chinese laws, worse than Thailand.)

Thank you.
