Hello All,

I'm looking for quotes on how much it would cost me hire a driver with a car in Chennai on a monthly basis. When i was in Chennai last year i go the impression its easy to hire a driver with a car. I cant even find any information on driver with cars.

Anyone got any idea on how much it would cost me monthly to hire a driver with a car to cover approximatelt 45 - 50km's per month.

Or is it a myth that you can hire drivers with a car in Chennai?

Any help will be much appreciated.

Thanks
Mo

40-50 KM per month or per day ?
I did not fully understand the dread term "Terminal Illness" until I saw Terminal 1 D of Delhi Airport.

Are you still looking for a car rental with driver? Well a toyota innova can run over 50k per month with 3000 km allowance and 25 days and 10 -12 hrs per day of services. Ofcourse extra for miles and times and out of station. Obviously a smaller car would cost less.

Standard rate for an Indica, with A/C, plus driver, should be around the following - on a daily hire basis :

- Rs 800-1,000 for 8 hours in 1 day
- Maxmimum travel within 8 hours is 80 KM in a day.
- Rs 11-12 per extra KM above 80 Km in a day
- Rs 100-120 for every extra hour above 8 hours in a day

Mind you, at this price you will get a rather rattly car, and a different driver every day, but the A/C would work.

The way car hires work in India (apart from brand names such as Hertz, which cost a lot more) is :

- There is a central guy (Agent) who procures customers
- There are a number of "owners" who have cars (with drivers) which are rented out through the Agent
- The cars are NOT registered to carry fare-paying passengers. They are "private" cars. As such they do not have the requisite insurance etc.

Having said that, everyone uses them because they cost less. Don't get worried about the absence of insurance. It is EXTREMELY unlikely that any passenger will be hurt in the event that an accident occurs within any major Indian city, because speeds are very low and all that will happen is that the car will get bashed up yet again and there will be some new dents. You, as a passenger, will not be hurt, and neither will you get involved in any Police case.

If you want to go down this path (as I did for 3 weeks in Kolkata without any problem), the way to get to a "monthly basis" car and driver is :

- Get in touch with an Agent
- Check out the various cars and drivers that the Agent sends to you over 7-10 days
- Select the car+driver you like best
- Talk to the owner of the car and make a private deal with him for the car and driver on a monthly basis.

The Owner will give you a good discount based on :
- Daily running of 45-50 KM, well below the standard 80 KM
- Assured usage every day

I expect that you can meet your requirements based on the above. Good Luck, nevertheless !

Hi Mo,

We were just there last week and used a car service. A large Toyota Inova was provided, A/C, 8 hours a day, with the same driver everyday.

Vehicle was comfortable but the driver was pretty lousy! In the sense that he was clueless...didn't know some areas and couldn't really understand very simple instructions in English. This company charged about 2500 Rs per day and we got the same driver everyday. It was a corporate arrangement, so they were selected by my husband's company.

WOW Xaverian, the rates you mentioned are really cheap compared to what we paid. How do we contact a service like the one you mentioned?
We are looking at getting a second car and driver in addition to the one that will be provided by my husband's company.

Are there also "day use" car services? Meaning we booking them the night before and pay per day for the whole day?

Would be good to know
Thanks!
