Hi there,
I'm curious about the typical business attire in Chennai for expats. Also, what would be a normal price for name brand shirts, trousers?

Typical attire for men - Formal shirts and trousers (pleated / flat front are both OK). "for expats" - varies - in the IT industry on the technical side, you could get away wearing a jeens and polo neck tee-shirts / formal shirt and jeans all 5 days of the week. On the business side, it's as above.

Prices for shirts would run north of about $20 for a shirt (passable - discounted Arrow, Van Heusen and Louis Philippe), $40 (same as above but not discounted).

You can also get stuff tailored quite reasonably - Syed Bawkher & co on Khader Nawaz Khan road are renowned suit specialists.

Personally, I have used the Raymond store on Teynampet Junction (on the main road - Anna Salai) for a suit - it was about $220 back in 2006 (all inclusive - they stock cloth from Raymond) and the fit and finish was first rate.

Great suggestions

Thank you all for your suggestions. If anyone else has ideas of good places to buy clothes, it would be greatly appreciated.I'm assuming that size isn't a problem at most stores, but if it matters, I'm 6 feet tall.

Thank you again for your suggestions. I enjoy reading all the threads on this forum. It is a very helpful resource.

The only problem you may encounter is that the typical 'Indian' fit runs narrower than the US fit (think European styled trousers). When I came back from the states after an extended stay of about 3 years, I had a hard time adjusting to the 'tighter fitting' clothes. You may get used to them after some time.

Check the other threads in Chennai forum for places. Express Mall, Skywalk Mall and Spencer's plaza are all good destinations.
