Hi Guys!

This is my first post here although I've been stalking this place for a while as a non-member . This forum has a ton of info on topics I am currently researching on now -- thanks for that!

I am moving from TN to Whitefield, Bengaluru next month. I am a single guy, and will be needing a rented accommodation (not looking at PG). I had a few questions in this regard.

1) I read some news articles on water shortage issues in Whitefield, esp. in summer time. Is this correct? If so which other nearby area would you recommend? Or at the least, how can I ensure when renting the place that it wouldn't have water issues (I am new to finding acco / staying by myself as well) ?

2) I also heard some concerns about safety in Bengaluru. People (esp. from IT) have gotten severely injured in robbery attempts as well as lost expensive items. So how is the safety aspect in Whitefield and surrounding areas specifically ?

3) Does Whitefield have good jogging/cycling tracks (preferably with some greenery) ?

4) Is "10 months' rent as initial deposit" the norm there? It sounds weird because where I am from, it is usually 4-6 months' rent max. And I consider that a bit high.

5) Can you please recommend a good mobile service provider with good 3G as well as voice coverage in the Whitefield area? I am currently using BSNL here in TN.

6) Also, related to above, I would be needing mobile internet access as soon as I land there, to help search for houses etc. But I suppose you cannot get a new connection unless you have proof of address? If so it then becomes a Catch22 . How would you work around this?

BTW, I hope a non-expat posting here wouldn't be an issue

It will almost certainly have water issues. what you experience depends on your land lord. if he is amenable he will arrange for a tanker load of water and ask you to reimburse him. If not? you bear some amount of grief.

I lived around indiranagar and TC Palya for almost two years. I also used to visit a friend in whitefield fairly often. Never heard of any thing untoward, nor did I experience anything such. Perhaps someone else with more knowledge of the area in question has a suggestion?

Again while this is a norm but what you experience depends on your land lord. I was able to get my last land lord to step down to 6 months instead of 10 months rent as deposit. I remember from my time in bombay (another city with a 10 month deposit rule) that land lords will agree on higher rent to reduce deposit, maybe that could work in your case? But just try to get them to reduce deposit alone before offering higher rent. And Ive never seen a land lord settling on less than 5 months, where abouts in TN are you from? If you dont mind my asking!

Give BSNL a shot here as well. I cant imagine it being worse. Airtel is what I used. while certainly not the best, airtel does offer a consistent experience. though they end up pissing me off in every city I go to. Consistently!

Airtel has a 4G service as well, in Bangalore that is! company ID card, your permanent address proof and a local proof. Anything with your bangalore address on it, with the landlords anme is also okay. I used an electricity bill.
meh...

That's worrying. Any other nearby area (within a 5 km radius) without this problem or with less severe problem? I was in Bangalore a month back to attend a wedding and on casual enquiry an auto driver said that Marathahalli will not have much water problems -- since a lot of powerful people stay there.

Yes, but the problem is that I want the connection before I even find a house. That is the catch-22 part :-(. I imagine most people in this situation would be using the internet on their roaming number. But I am afraid that would quickly drain the balance which might be utilized for important calls.

I apologies, I did not mean to imply that I know for certain that Whitefield has water issues. I meant to imply that one day or the other you may be stuck without water for some reason or another. My last year in Bangalore was in TC Palya which always has had water supply issues with piped supply coming in only a few months after I moved in. During my time there the landlord ensured that the sump was always filled up before it ran empty and I knew how to operate the pump to get the overhead tank filled up if they did not get to it. So despite the fact that the area had issues with the water supply, I never did. Even in an area with ample ground water and reliable piped supply the pump may well give up the ghost. It'll be your land lord or the association (if apartment) that controls if you get affected.

Also I've never been charged roaming charges for using data on my Bangalore number anywhere else in the country. Not sure that if that has everything to do with my numbers being postpaid or not because they're always the plain vanilla CUG plans that telcos offer for companies. Maybe get an airtel no in TN before moving? And request that paper bills be stopped.
