I'm a writer with many deadlines & a fluctuating income, so I try to live inexpensively. I haven't been in India for 3 yrs. Lower Dharamsala & Mcleodganj were 2x more expensive than the previous year, for example. I need to know beforehand this time. I'll go where I can afford to be. Any advice? Thanks.

How long do you intend to stay in India? It is nice to have cheap living costs, but paying many hundreds of $ to fly there may not make sense for a shortish stay?

Probably, if you can state a weekly or monthly rent budget, you may get more help to find if India still suits your needs.

This recent thread is along similar lines to your own: https://www.indiamike.com/india/indi...7/#post2093680

From your description, it seems you went to one of the tourist gulches. If you do indeed want to live inexpensively, go live in Raigarh, Jaunpur, Bhuj, Jhunjununu, Salua near Hijili, Sholapur, Kapurthala, Haziribag, Ambala....

They are all inexpensive relative to the gringo/blanco tourist gulches of Delhi, Goa, Mumbai, Kerala, Himachal Pradesh, Jaipur etc..

Then there is always the Mekong Delta !!!

Anywhere outside an urban environment. However, they may not be places you would like to be. I was thinking of away from Sholapur city although I was so happy last time I was there to be back in Maharashtra..
