Sorry, don't have a link for this. Received it in a spam email but thought it seemed worth reading. Comments?

For mobile SIM, voter ID, passport, or license – Aadhaar is no longer needed

This development came after the Supreme Count issuing an interim order on March 14, stating an indefinite extension of the deadline to link Aadhaar with mobile numbers, bank accounts and passports.

Aadhaar is no longer needed to get a mobile connection. Telecom companies will now be accepting other documents also, like driving license, passport and voter ID, since the Centre directed them to implement the new rule immediately.

The previous deadline was of March 31 and Supreme Court issued an interim order on 14thMarch which indefinitely extends the deadline for linking Aadhaar to mobile phone numbers, bank accounts, passports and other services. Dipak Misra, Chief Justice, headed a five-judge bench and mentioned that till the time no judgment comes on the constitutionality of “unique identification programme”, Aadhaar is no longer needed to be linked to these services.

- Aadhaar is no longer needed: Times of India reported on Wednesday “To buy a mobile SIM, you no longer need an Aadhaar card”. Telecom companies have been directed by the government to accept alternative documents like passport, driving license and voter ID. Quoting Telecom Secretary, Aruna Sundararajan, it also mentioned that telecom operators need to follow the new rule immediately.

- Supreme Court has indefinitely extended the deadline: On March 14, the Supreme Court extended the deadline of March 31 for mandatory linking of Aadhaar Card in order to avail various welfare schemes run by the government and services until the Constitution Bench delivers its verdict on validity of the 12-digit biometric number and the enabling law.

- Extension of deadline applies to Aadhaar-mobile number linking: The deadline extension also applies to the mandatory linking of Aadhaar with mobile phone numbers and bank accounts. The Constitution Bench is hearing petitions that have challenged the constitutional validity of Aadhaar Card and its enabling Act.accounts. Update on Supreme Court interim ruling on Aadhaar. Ruling is now confirmed.

"The Supreme Court has upheld the Aadhaar scheme as constitutionally valid. However, the apex court’s five-judge constitution bench also struck down several provisions in the Aadhaar Act."

@Nick-H: you'll have to update your sig. Life just got a little less aadhaar.

My cousin went to reliance jio office as the local jio centre refused to give her a Jio sim without aadhar.

Apparantly Jio was willing to give a sim without an Aadhar ( she didnt as she is non resident but has a PAN ) but needed proof of Indian address ( she did not have it ) and she had to go to airtel instead..

Don't they all require proof of address?

Anyway, at least it is not required to commit adultery any longer. Or am I getting my news items mixed up?

Local address (hotel/guesthouse is fine) is needed even when you pick a SIM at the airport (atleast at DEL)

Problem is that jio, initially did not have its processes ironed out.

Maybe you are right. I think it's time to troll the jio kiosk/booth (if it does exist) at BOM & DEL

Aadhar has always been needed only to collect Govt Benefits. However, many establishments decided on their own to demand in anticipation of tit becoming mandatory or in an effort to score points with the Govt who were pushing it.

AFAIK:

1. Mobile SIM. Aadhar Not required. I received one by showing my passport. However already has a system of using biometic to speed up the validation process via aadhar and may not change their process anytime soon.

2. voter ID, passport -- Aadhar Not Required. Physical verification by local Govt officials

3. Iicense - depends on state. AFAIK they will accept Voter ID or Aadhar or Central Govt issued ID like OCI. I got a Karnataka License using OCI
