Hello all.
From mid March through till mid April '13, l will be taking my first very long overdue/anticipated trip to lndia. Am at a loss for a budget. I understand that everyones standards are different to the next persons. I don't intend/can't afford to live in luxury during my stay neither, do l totally want to ruff it. Return flights to lndia, train travel within lndia have already been paid for. Most of my accommodation too has already been paid for; the remainer booked, to be paid on arrival.
Taking into account that this is my first trip to lndia plus, travelling solo to - am reckoning that l will spend more than a seasoned lndian traveller.
My itenery consists off : Mumbai - 4 nights, Delhi - 4 nights, Varanassi - 2 nights, Kolkata - 3 nights, Jaipur - 3 nights, Agra - 1 night &, finally Goa - 5 nights.
All that l need to account for will be meals, payments to attractions, local transport. To be honest, even a treat or two like a massage. The odd tipple in a nice bar would also be nice.
Am looking to account for in the region if 200 euro a week or, by currency converter rates that's in the region of 14,000 rupees per wk. Bearing in mind as mentioned earlier, this is my first trip and; solo at that so, reckon that l'd spend more if a seasoned traveller as, am new to the lndian experience.
Many thanks guys for all advice in advance in relation to my question.

Thanks,
Danny.

Thanks for all your advice on this guys. Very much appreciated.

Your budget of 14000Rs or 2000Rs a day on average sounds like sufficient for your trip. If most of your accommodation is pre booked you will know how much you need to set aside for this. I would look to spend less than this including my accommodation

The entrance fee to see the Taj Mahal is aboout 750Rs. Entry into sites like this is where you will eat a hole into your budget.
A few beers and a small meal in a bar in Delhi will probably cost you about 500-600Rs.
Street food is cheap, as is food from small local food outlets and when you are traveling by train.
Faster, faster, until the thrill of speed overcomes the fear of death... (Hunter S. Thompson)

Concerned about your Itinerary, and you've already booked it, you're not gonna come away from India with a great impression.

Why all big cities?

And if you've chosen the wrong part of Goa, then that would really polish off a big missed opportunity trip.

Sorry if my message came across wrong. I certainly am not concerned about my journey, more so relishing the prospect.
Why the big cities you ask. I live in an isolated place, l really want the 'bustle' of it all. Am certain that l'll get and more.
As for finishing my trip in Goa. If it turns out to be the wrong part, l can always jump on a scooter and move on. Am finishing off in Paolem. Maybe it won't be for me, maybe it will. Guess l won't truly know till l get there.

Palolem's great, one of the best places I've been in Goa, and if it's a little too busy, there's always Patnem and Agonda close by.

I was 7 Weeks in India last March/April, 5 of them just me and the ruckie and I decided to try to do it on 20 or about 1600 rups a day and in the main managed it ok. It is the "sites" that bleed the money.
I was in all your destinations except Goa and Mumbai (Mumbai 2008 for me and my first time in India). I booked some of my accommodation before going but not all and would have a backup plan, say a 2nd or even 3rd name for accommodation as I am sure you will find that the descriptions and photos are sometimes rose tinted.
I did a blog that had photos of most of my accommodation and will give you an idea of how far the money goes. In general I found that there is not much between paying 500 rups to paying 1000 rups.

Have a good one.

P.S. By the way I was in Sligo in Oct 11 for the Sligo Live (as I am a big Elvis Costello fan) and we had a great time, stayed out at Aughris, and had some great nights in the Beach bar.
